As an example....

If your work eligibility has changed or if you have become a U.S. citizen, you must apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will no longer read “Not Valid for Employment,” but you will retain the same Social Security number.

To get a replacement card:

* Complete an Application For A Social Security Card (Form SS-5); and

* Show us documents proving your:

o Immigration status;

o Work eligibility; and

o Identity.

* Take (or mail) your completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. If you live in the New York City metropolitan area, Las Vegas NV, Orlando FL, or Phoenix AZ you may need to apply in person at your local Social Security Card Center.

All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

We will mail your number and card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents.

For details about the type of evidence you must provide, see Social Security Numbers For Noncitizens (Publication No. 05-10096) or Documents You Need for a Social Security Card.

What's this SSN restriction??

Nothing else but a mentioning on the SSN "valid for work only with DHS authorization", which indicates the individual can work only as long as the EAD card is valid. It appears on your SSN if you got it with an EAD card.

Hey Guys,

Hope everyone is doing great. I have been a silent reader of the forum for some time now and find the information very useful and helpful. I had a question and was hoping you guys could answer it. I am awaiting for my AOS intyerview which is later this mnth. I currently have an EAD and an SSN and would like to file taxes jointly with my US citizen Spouse. Please do let me know the procedure to get this done. Can I file online, or do I have to mail the forms. Also what forms are there and where can I get this information from? Do I have to include any foriegn income before I came to the US? I did not even have an ssn at that time. I would be very greatful if you could help me with this information. Jhunjhun I see you filed joint taxes recently with your spouse. Please do let me know the procedure. God bless you all. Thanxs

This morning I received two emails from CRIS. However, they were emails we already received. I checked the USCIS website and they show both the EAD & AOS show being touched today. So, maybe Benny will be hearing something this week!

Yes, you'll be able to file jointly and online. Most likely you'll have to include your foreign income.

Hello, I know it's overwhelming when it comes to tax season. I did our 2008 Federal tax return online ( www.irs.gov) and filed electronically because it was free. I did include my foreign income using a form 2555 but also you can use form 2555E. You can use Form 1040, or 1040A for you federal return. To tell you honestly, I wasn't a resident of USA in yr 2008 because I didn't meet the residency test. I filed our tax return electronically and it was accepted. I filed our states tax return as well and we already got our states and federal refunds in two weeks.

Although it says there that I need to include a letter from my wife to treat me as a resident, but still I did file our return electronically. Mailing paper return can take a while.

If you have any question, you can PM me.

"Have faith in God, Jesus answered. I'll tell you the truth. if anyone says to this mountain, Go, throw yourself to the sea, and that does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen. it will be done for him. Therefore I'll tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours" (MARK 11:22-24)

You are probably correct that they have just updated the system, but makes me feel better that they have updated online anyway. lol.
