Obama's White House Team starting to take shape

With his history-making election behind him, Barack Obama was moving ahead with his transition on Wednesday as he prepared to confront the daunting challenges that he will have to face as president in just 76 days, amid two wars and the gravest economic crisis to afflict the country since the Great Depression.

Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, a former aide to President Bill Clinton and a close friend of Mr. Obama, has been offered the post of his White House chief of staff and is expected to accept, according to Democrats familiar with the process.

And the three co-leaders of Mr. Obama's transition team are to be announced Wednesday -- John D. Podesta, the former Clinton chief of staff; Valerie Jarrett, a longtime Obama adviser; and Pete Rouse, Mr. Obama's Senate chief of staff.

MSNBC reports that Emanuel has accepted the job, though I haven't seen confirmation elsewhere. (I can appreciate the concerns about Emanuel; in fact, I share many of them. But as far as I can tell, the COS position is more managerial than ideological. I don't see any reason to think Emanuel will be setting the WH agenda, but rather, will help execute it.) Update: MSNBC has now walked its report back, saying Emanuel has not agreed to accept the offer. This does not mean he won't.

What's more, the Politico reports that Obama's team is considering Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Environmental Protection Agency, Caroline Kennedy as a possible U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Colin Powell for secretary of defense or education. (Powell dismissed talk of a possible role in Obama's administration).

As for the rest of the team, the Obama-Biden transition team also announced an advisory board consisting of Carol Browner, William Daley, Christopher Edley, Michael Froman, Julius Genachowski, Donald Gips, Governor Janet Napolitano, Federico Pena, Susan Rice, Sonal Shah, Mark Gitenstein, and Ted Kaufman.

With hundreds of jobs to fill and only 10 weeks until Inauguration Day, Obama and his transition team confronted a formidable task complicated by his anti-lobbyist campaign rhetoric.

The official campaign Web Site said no political appointees would be permitted to work on "regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration."

But almost exactly one year ago, on Nov. 3, 2007, candidate Obama went considerably further than that while campaigning in South Carolina. "I don't take a dime of their money, and when I am president, they won't find a job in my White House," he said of lobbyists at the time.

Because they often have prior experience in government or politics, lobbyists figure as potential appointees for presidents of both parties.

DEFENSE - Mike Tyson - He will bite the ears off the leader of any foreign country that disrespects the free world.

JUSTICE - O. J. Simpson - He says that the accused is innocent until proven guilty by a jury of his peers composed mostly of black Americans.

TREASURY - Wesley Snipes - He subscribes to the idea that filing a false income tax return can not help in solving the deficit.

COMMERCE - Oprah Winfrey - She says that Detroit will rise again, before the South does because Obama got beat in Dixie, as she will donate a Buick or a Pontiac to anybody who can prove that he is a descendant of a plantation slave.

HOMELAND SECURITY - Muhammad Ali - He will knock out anyone who breaches the security of the U. S. of A.

AGRICULTURE - Madonna - She says that cotton is the best material, girl.

TRANSPORTATION - Gary Coleman - He believes that more midget cars like the VW Beetle or the Honda Fit be produced because they are gas savers.

INTERIOR- Britney Spears - She thinks that the Department has something to do with not wearing panties.

LABOR - Paris Hilton - She can always do community labor and service instead of being held in a Los Angeles County jail filled with undocumented day laborers.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES - Magic Johnson - Based on his experience, everybody, especially promiscuous athletes like Kobe Bryant, must be tested for AIDS.

HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT - Jesse Jackson - He says that every community must be patterned after the South Side of Chicago or Watts in L.A.

ENERGY - Barry Bonds - He believes that only HGH or steroids can bolster someone’s energy and physical strength.

EDUCATION - Ellen DeGeneres - She says no to California’s Prop 8 and says that school children should be taught the ABC's of same sex marriage.
