I used the election as the introduction to my class today. (I train homeless men to staff houses for people with mental illness.) I said that if a mixed-race boy in the US with a name like Barack Obama, brought up by a single Mum on food stamps, can overcome those obstacles and become President, then they can too put their past behind them and achieve their goals.

That's a heartwarming little speech - but the guys are homeless. Why not bring some cash with you next time, and give each one $5000 and a rental application for an apartment - and provide them with an employment reference.

I offered some advice that might help him help these homeless guys be not homeless, while satirizing the "spread the wealth" mantra that has been in the press recently. Where's the "attack"? Where's the "talking bad about him" ? Edited November 5, 2008 by akdiver
