I used the election as the introduction to my class today. (I train homeless men to staff houses for people with mental illness.) I said that if a mixed-race boy in the US with a name like Barack Obama, brought up by a single Mum on food stamps, can overcome those obstacles and become President, then they can too put their past behind them and achieve their goals.
That's a heartwarming little speech - but the guys are homeless. Why not bring some cash with you next time, and give each one $5000 and a rental application for an apartment - and provide them with an employment reference.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I work at the shelter, not just come in to do 'speeches'. I case manage the graduates and do indeed help them to find jobs, get their GEDs, save their money, get an apartment and, yes, they get an employment reference from me after they've gone through the program (usually a year).

Oh, but maybe you were just trying to be amusing. My bad.

he's being totally insensitive and ignorant, it seems to be a current theme throughout his posts since the election. i read what you said you did for work and i think it is very commendable, ignore him and keep up the good work.

Oh yes!! Disagreement is now being "insensitive". Is that the new policy? See, with Bush, it was "disagreement means you're a terrorist".

It gives of its life for you to live.

How do you contribute?

Hmmm?

you aren't disagreeing you are just being unnecessarily rude, those are two very different things.

someone was explaining about their work that helps people and you start talking bad about them? how is that disagreeing? keep on getting mad, it makes you look so superior.

That's a heartwarming little speech - but the guys are homeless. Why not bring some cash with you next time, and give each one $5000 and a rental application for an apartment - and provide them with an employment reference.

that was uncalled for.
