NEWSWEEK has learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family—clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

A Palin aide said: "Governor Palin was not directing staffers to put anything on their personal credit cards, and anything that staffers put on their credit cards has been reimbursed, like an expense. Nasty and false accusations following a defeat say more about the person who made them than they do about Governor Palin."

McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech Tuesday night, but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

She's going to be the scape goat. I am surprised she doesn't get that. Sad really, I can't decide if she is just that niave or whether the cynism is justified. I didn't have anything good to say about her candidacy but I don't really wish her ill, not on a personal note. She was played by the GOP insiders, they lost so they can now toss her aside.

In a way, AK may be correct in that it was the Dems to lose.

To that end, perhaps they did throw Sarah to the wolves.

We can see that nearing the end they were preparing their own parachutes and labeling

her as "rogue".

But from what I've seen...she's not going to take it lightly, and she's gained a lot of fans.

I mean, look at Trooper-Gate. For better or for worse, she doesn't take things sitting down.

I think we'll hear more from Gov. Palin.

I really doubt it. The McCain campaign basically made her into the equivalent of a bikini-wearing model draped across the hood of a clapped out old banger in a desperate attempt to help sell the car.

She'll be more a Huckabee figure though. She has fans, for sure, but not in the 'inner circle'. I just can't see the GOP lending itself to an 'Obama' type run for candidacy - besides, she would have to totally change. For one thing, she really would have to know something about more than one issue and I am just not convinced she's up to it - I also question whether she really has the hunger for it. Still, time will tell.

Which goes back to there being nothing wrong with McCain until he prostituted off his his vaunted Maverick principles to appeal to the GOP conservative base, nominated a Harriet Myers figure to be his running mate, and fixated on a silly, out of date, clicheed construction of Average Joe in Joe the Plumber.
