I kept clicking on different stations covering the election last night and people from the UK were wearing what looked like a red flower on their lapel on the BBC. What was this for?

Why is that unusual? I've seen poppies being sold by the veterans almost a week before Memorial Day in May. Maybe to have them on for more than just a day actually puts it in people's minds for more than jsut one day, no?

They usually start selling them a couple of week prior to Remembrance Sunday (9th November though the actual day is the 11th). I still haven't got mine yet.

I guess because I've been out of Canada so long (effectively, near-continuous from Jan 1994, and I've never been in Canada around 11/11 afterwards), I forgot that Canucks don't just wear the poppies on 11/11.

The general idea is you leave them on the cenotaph on wreaths etc. the after the service at 11am and then you buy new ones the following year from the legion. The poppies are usually distributed by the Legion 2 weeks prior.

It was one of the first things I packed when I moved to the US - my poppy.. I wouldn't feel right not having it on this time of year.
