good day guys,

i just have some queries on the GC and SSN. i'm an IR1 benificiary and i'm leaving for the US this 10th of november. i just wanna gather infos ahead so i'd know what to expect and what to do as soon as i get there.

regarding the GC and SSN guys, do i need to call or go somewhere to get them both? or do i wait for it to be delivered?

can i already get a job as soon as i have both? i DON'T need an EAD right? (since my visa category is IR1 with 10year GC)

when i do apply for a job, will i only present the 2? (GC and SSN)

how long do i have to wait to get them both? (weeks? or months?)

i apologize for being so naive on these stuffs  , i just wanna be well-informed on what to expect so i won't have to worry about anything when i get there.

thanks for your time..hope i could hear from you guys..

Hi,

You can't get SS# without having work permit, it could take up to 5 months to get it then u can apply for SS, when u apply for GC it will be deliverd to the P.O Box, u should have ur name under the P.O Box adress, getting GC could takes up to 1 year deppend on the country of origon.

Best of luck

Durra

Oh, u can't work without work permit or SS, but u don't have to be GC holder to work so once you get the work permit and SS u'll be able to work in anything.

The above answer is incorrect.

An IR-1 visa holder will get their green card sent to their US address within a month or so of arriving in the USA. If you ticked the box about wanting your SSN sent to you on the form, then this will be sent too (separately from the green card, but similar time frame). You shouldn't need your physical green card to find work, as the endorsed (=stamped) visa in your passport serves as a temporary green card, but most employers will want to see your SSN and green card so I'd be prepared to ait that month or so till you get it.

but i can apply at DMV for my NV state ID right? how long do i have to wait to do this?

That would be different from state to state- I would assume once you have a SSN and your passport as proof of visa/ legal resident, you can get the state ID there and then (you can here in Arkansas), but Nevada might be different.

You will just get your GC by mail. It takes time. I'm on my third week and still it has not yet arrived. You can apply for SSN separately. This is what I did and now just waiting for it also to be delivered. I tried to open my personal bank account as well as change my hubby's account to a joint account but the Bank of America requires the GC aside from the passport. And I cannot even apply for a driver's license without the GC and the SSN.

Anent work, I think it depends on the employer. Still taking my time to acclimatize and develop a multi-tasking system so I really cannot say anything based on experience.

Good luck!
