From my understanding in Alaska, if Stevens isn't seated in the Senate, the Governor makes the decision about a replacement and there isn't necessarily a new election. I don't think she can appoint herself to the Senate.

No, this is not true.

It will depend on how such decisions are made in Alaska.

It works exactly as I described. Upon a vacancy, a special election must be called within 60 days. The governor can appoint someone to fill the position until the special election yields a result.

But even so - before this change was made, she COULD appoint herself. The previous governor appointed his daughter to the senate seat that HE vacated by becoming governor. This is why the change was made to require a special election.

FWIW - Stevens is currently leading by 2% or so, with about half of the votes counted. The previous count had him ahead by 4%, so it's shaping up to be a nailbiter.

Its worth pointing out that, I think it was last year, we had a race that was tied, and had to be decided by the flip of a coin (:

I don't want world peace either. Who needs a military when you have world peace? A lot of economic, scientific and technological advances are due to war and national defense. This is my prediction:

1) She falls into obscurity since he pissed off far to many people in her own party in Alaska.

2) Becomes a cocktail party joke, replacing those awkward pauses where a Monica Lewinsky joke would have been placed.

3) Palin's family falls apart, and her daughter (grandchild and SIL) no longer speak to her, since her daughter was forced to feel national embarrassment solely due to her mother's desire for power and prestige.

Well I've never claimed to understand the AK electorate. But, I do hail from North of the 60th parallel, and I do know how weird we can be. Common to all true Northerners.
