Oh I think I get this.

I worked for a really nice guy once who was very gentrified in the old money kind of way.

He nearly always referred to another man's wife as 'his bride'.

My stepfather occasionally calls my mum "his bride" and when talking to my hubster will sometimes call me my hubster's "bride". I don't know that it is all that unusual. I see it as a complement, as this is the lady who I love as someone I would marry over and over.

That said, I think it's strange GWB would not say Michelle, unless he momentarily forgot her name...

Bush is also from Texas, and that may be a southern thing. I don't see what's weird about it. This may show that Bush and Obama are more friendly with each other than people may think, since it to me shows familiarity. I know people who would say something like that to me or Sujeet, and actually they are from up north. I don't take it as weird.
