haha....dont know where this came from. My husband is half white...father is white....and he would shoot somebody for thinking he's white.

Flip that around: if a man who was half white/half black said they would shoot somebody for thinking he was black, would you consider that acceptable? Or would that be racist?

i was waiting for someone else to notice that.

Me CDN, what does that mean? seriously.
It means that one has been elected, but has not taken office. And truthfully, he will not actually be elected until the College of Electors actually elects him - in December.

Oh right. I keep forgetting that its not a direct transfer of authority like in Canada. We got Bush for several more weeks. Thanks. I feel educated.

Hubby is incommunicado right now - he won't discuss politics without a lot cursing.

Weeks? Try months.

Obama is half-white. His father, who was black, abandoned him and his mother when he was about two years old. He lived with his white mother and white grandparents. This being the case, if he is half black and half white - isn't it just as accurate to call his a white president as it is to call him a black president?
you forgot his black wife.
So...your race is determined by who you marry???

Ummmmm.....no!

HONESTLY...who CARES...SIGH

ANYTHING is better then the last fool who ran this country!

WHO CARES WHAT COLOR HE IS

why does it have to be a damn issue...

im outta this thread...seriously I am in a great mood I refuse to let it ruin me

This has been my point for a long time now. But, apparently, there are few of people who actually feel that way.

To refer to someone as being black was very inappropriate in this country before the civil rights movement, they were colored, believed they preferred being called black, even though haven't seen a black one yet, anywhere from a light tan to a dark brown. Could be color blind, I don't know.

Race became an issued with the N-400, not very many choices, and my wife sure isn't the hell white, she stood out perfectly when taking her passport type photos, if she was white, wouldn't see her. Regarding culture, no blacks, on that form, either you are Hispanic or not. White is a term that originated in the ignorant south to distinguish one from being colored. Stupid and has no business being asked on the N-400 form. Those of the Negro race were considered sub humans by the idiots down there.

The only reason why race or culture is an issue is that we have idiots in this country that make it an issue when in truth, we are all genetically linked to a common source. But society, culture, race, and religion make an issue out of it, even to the point of preventing a person from marrying someone they love, and the USCIS certainly makes an issue out of it. What the heck, they require a colored photo for ID, what else to they need?

There were actually two terms used pre-1960, "negro" and "coloured" (due to the genetic inheritance of a large majority of African-Americans, the latter term coincidentally matched the apartheid-era South African definition).

(edit: the negative connotation of the term in South Africa may have played a small part in the preference of African-Americans to be labelled "black" rather than "coloured")

I've apparently got a G-pass..if ya wanna be black for a spell, you can borrow it.

Did one of the kids you work with give it to you? I was an honorary Asian last year!

Technically he's the first African-American president, if you want to be nit-picky.

Yep, they sure did! This is why they humor me when I try to get them to stop saying n*** and replace it with "fellow black man," which is a bit of a mouthful.

And the oddest thing about all of these kids, most of whom were either born in Cape Verde or there parents were, is that they don't identify themselves as African or of African descent. They do identify as black, despite the fact that most have Creole roots.

Barack Obama will not be limited by this. He did not campaign on a platform of race and his presidency will not be based on race. The historic nature of this presidency is worth noting but that is all. It is more than time to move right beyond that.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

But truthfully - given the incredibly tiny, tiny, tiny genetic difference among the "races", and the scientific fact that, if you look back far enough, everyone can trace their roots back to Africa - AND the claim that race doesn't, or at least shouldn't matter - isn't it reasonable to say that we are ALL "African Americans" ? And isn't it reasonable to say that by making a big deal about race, even if it is a positive big deal, actually does more to accent our differences, rather than bring us together? Edited by akdiver

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

No.

Because only someone like Barack can claim to be African-American. His father is from Africa. Blacks in the US are too far removed to technically be called African-American. It's just PC-Babble.

And EVERYone wouldn't be African-American anyway, since there are countries other than America out there...

"Everyone has African ancestors" would, however, possibly be true.
