We are currently living in US with a legal working visa and have a consular interview coming up in a few weeks.

From what I have read in VJ, most of you live in Canada and visa/passport are mailed to you by mail. It's my understanding that for those who lives in US can pick up the visa/passport at the consulate. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for them to have the visa ready? It’s really hard for us book our return flight without knowing when it would be ready.

Thanks

it'll be next day at the earliest, but they don't usually let you go back to pick them up anymore. You could always have them mail it to the hotel you're staying at in Montreal.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Exactly right. MTL does not allow you to pick up your visa in person; although I believe they do let you if you can prove you need it for traveling. Otherwise, plan for a couple of days in beautiful Montreal and bring in your Expresspost envelope with the hotel address where you will be staying.

Refer to page 3 if you are living in the US in legal status.

We were living in the US on my husband’s work visa at the time of our interview (April 2008). We were allowed to pick up our passports the same day. BTW, our visa was under the F3 category (married son/daughter of USC)

Work based green cards that are interviewed in Montreal for Canadians actually resident in the US are apparently available for pick up, usually the next day. The Consulate usually closes at 4 so it would be before that. A Canadian on another list I belong to just recounted their own experience doing exactly what you are doing and they were able to pick up their visas the next day.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thank you all for the replies. I found this site 3 days ago and I found huge amount of information in here, I wish I had found this site months ago.

I did read something in the enclosed document that mentioned a legal US resident can pick up the visa next business day because they only mail to Canadian address, I am posting this message just to see if there are any members on the forum who had their visa picked up.

I guess we do not need to prepare a Xpresspost envelop, right?
