in brazil the best colleges are public (and public in brazil means free). the private one i went, if i double how much i used to pay 10 years ago, and let's say it's 500/month, that'll be a total of 24k for 4 years.

In Australia it costs now. But they have this scheme called HECS Higher Education Contribution Scheme, basically, its a loan from the governement which you pay back once you start working at as a percentage of your income, taken out with tax. The annual HECS debt starts from around $9,000 a year to about $45,000 I think.

My parents generation got free education but two years before I got there, it was all taken away.

in-state tuition at rutgers (my alma mater) is $11k per academic year. What public college wants 180k???

I am sure it can be a lot cheaper than 180K for 4 years...It's been 5 years since I graduated from a public university but I didn't live on campus and it was maybe 8K a year(I had financial aid though), even if you double that for inflation, nowhere near 180K for 4 years. They must be adding in tons of expenses or a very expensive college IMO.

1. There's an idiot in the Naturalization forum that hath pissed me off.

2. Nessa, I don't think most public unis here are that expensive. Mine was about $6000 a year, and I think it's about that for UW (which is an excellent school)

3. Amby, good morning.

They do add tons of expenses. When my son was looking at UW for total expenses, they had included like $2500 a semester for random stuff like gas, food, etc. I don't remember the exact amounts, but I remember thinking it was insane.
