Back home with the cat. Just took a three hour nap, but I am still tired.

I have had such good experiences with US Airways, no complaints. The food is ok, they seem fairly organised and I like that the fflight attendants are 50+, gives me an enourmous feeling of security, knowing that they can tell how serious a situation is. So far, on all flight, we left on time, today we were even an hour early. I almost slept all the way through and chatted a bit with the 50+ alkie & chain smoker lady who went to see her "soldier" as she kept on saying, who lives near Dallas but now got deployed to Iraq.

I did, however, have to pay $50 overweight fee for my suitcase. I was 5 lbs over...why did I think I could take 70 lbs? It was actually 50. But I was told I could take to bags, each 32kg and somehow I thought 32 kg was 70lbs. Anyway, it's only $50, so I am not beating myself up over it.

Mom picked me up and was overly happy to see me. She had lots of gifts for me in the car, since it was St. Niklas yesterday.

I got Cleo a cat nip toy, so she is been slobbering all over it for the past three hours and seems kind of high. What is catnip, does anyone know?

To answer your question, catnip is a mint herb that has a compound in it that gives most cats kind of a high you could say, but it's perfectly safe.

Catnip and catmints are mainly known for the behavioral effects they have on cats, particularly domestic cats.[7] When cats sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, leap about and purr, often salivating copiously. Some cats will also growl and meow. This reaction only lasts for about ten minutes before the cat loses interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" after which it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before.[8] Young kittens and older cats are less likely to react to catnip.

Approximately two thirds of cats are susceptible to the behavioral effects of catnip. The phenomenon is hereditary; for example, most cats in Australia are not susceptible to catnip, since Australian cats are drawn from a relatively closed genetic pool.[9] It elicits such a response in only some cats, because a genetic element is involved that is enriched in domesticated breeds. There is some disagreement about the susceptibility of lions and tigers to catnip. Some claim that the way lions and domestic cats react to catnip suggest further evidence of the genetic existence of a susceptibility to catnip outside of domestic felines.[9]

Catnip contains nepetalactone, a terpene. Nepetalactone can be extracted from catnip using steam distillation.[10] Cats detect it through their olfactory epithelium and not through their vomeronasal organ.[11] At the olfactory epithelium, the nepetalactone binds to one or more olfactory receptors where it probably mimics a cat pheromone, such as the hypothetical feline facial pheromone or the cat urine odorant MMB.

Other plants that also have this effect on cats include valerian (Valeriana officinalis) and plants that contain actinidine or dihydroactinidiolide (Smith, 2005). wikipedia

You all might find this following piece of information really lame, but both of my orchids grew while I was away - one has 3 new shoots and about 10 blossoms and the other one has one shoot with over 10 blossoms as well. Love orchids!

I'm with you. Had a migraine all day. Took 3 extra strength advil while I was at work (proctoring exams). Came home and napped 2 hours. Just took 2 tylenol pm...will pass out soon and hopefully the damn headache will go with it.

in other news:

I am going to Berlin in March!!!!!!! School educator conference on the Holocaust. I'm so freaking excited. i get NO perks as department head, but my school is helping me pay for the trip and in return I will hold a workshop when I get back. I've been to Berlin before but not with other teachers or for a specific reason like this. I'm thrilled.
