Well, "UG" (not her real name, she's not a cavewoman!) went over to the Nairobi Embassy bright and early the morning of the 5th, only to be told that her printout of the electronic visa form was missing a page, and that she had to go pay some fee at some bank, and then the bank said she had to pay it at the Embassy, and... well, by the time she finished running in circles, they didn't have time to interview her, so she'll be back first thing the morning of the 6th.

(It didn't take me much time to Google up an instructions page for fiancées which explained the whole bank fee thing, but since the Nairobi Embassy tried to MAIL the info packet to her in Uganda, which is a bad idea, and then she had to get a packet from the Kampala Embassy instead, there's the possibility that the packet she got was missing that instructional page, or something!)

Her flight back to Uganda is the 7th, so we need things to move quickly now that she's been delayed a day. :(

Sorry to hear that HI-UG! We actually went to the bank the day before the interview only to be told that we had to pay at the embassy. Before doing the finger printing, we paid $350 (though the receipt had $210, guess its the old fee) and then accomplished everything in the following couple of minutes.

I would advise you go to the embassy page: http://nairobi.usembassy.gov/immigrant_visas/visa-packets.html and crosscheck with the K1 packet to make sure you have every document they want and also, for the affidavit of support, it should be the original from you, not a faxed copy. Download the instructions from the same page too. On some form you dont have to sign, i guess its the DS-230, she will sign after taking the oath.

We got the visa the following day but we actually have to fly back to Nairobi bc our package is missing some documents and it has to be repacked. Its better you get it after a couple of days than having a package missing necessary documents identified at the POE.

Wish you all the best!!

Victory!

She went back this morning.

Whoever she talked to today admitted that she was lied to yesterday, and was supposed to pay at the embassy, not the bank.

They admitted that she was lied to yesterday, and didn't have to bring her medical papers from IOM, and that IOM had sent them yesterday.

And they admitted that their own information had told her to fill out the wrong form (-160 vs. -156 or something, I forget.)

She did have to run out to a cybercafe and print out the RIGHT form...

But after that, they interviewed her. And approved her.

The only downside is that they want her to pick up the Visa at 9am Friday, and her flight back to Uganda was booked for midday Thursday, but once she gets somewhere she can get on-line, I should be able to get that sorted out REAL fast, since the ticket was booked using my frequent flyer miles and the airline looooves me. :)

It's been a good week for VJers in Uganda, huh Taatabunny? :)

Thank you for all of your congratulations. We are now back in Kampala and here's the full story:

Travel and Accommodation We took Queens bus (queenscoach.com) from Nakumatt Kampala at 715am on Sunday 26th of September. They are a new bus company with very very good services, we recommend them to anyone who has to make this journey by bus. We booked at the Kenya Youth Hostel, walking distance from the IOM Medical Offices. The hostel was fair with nice staff and somewhat clean facilities. Most importantly for us, it was a very convenient location to IOM.

Medical Exam We had to be at IOM at 730am on Monday morning, so we started walking from the hostel at 7am. It took us less than 10mins to get there and by the time we came the whole place was already crowded with many others waiting for the same exam. At around 8 they had a short counseling session. After counseling they called each person by name to do their blood tests, then xray, exam, then vaccinations. It definitely does take one whole day and the cost for us was $255 ($143 medical exam, $112 vaccinations). We got the results the following day without any problems.

Interview We called the Embassy to schedule an interview on the same day we got the Medical Exam. I had to be very persistent in order to speak with someone, but when I finally got through and told them our coming from Uganda they had no problem scheduling the interview for us the same week. Since it was the last Wednesday of the month we were scheduled for Thursday 7am. At around 730 we were called to turn in all the necessary paperwork. At 8 we were called for fingerprinting. Then at 845 we were called for the interview. I went up to the window with my fiance, but the consular lady told me I could go sit down. During the interview, they asked my fiance these questions:

(1)What is your fiancee's name?

(2) Are you married?

(3) How long have you known your fiancee?

(4) What does she do?

(5) What do you know about your fiancee?

(6) Have you been to the US? (bc my fiance has a visitor's VISA and had come to the US earlier this year to visit my family)

(7) How long were you there?

(8) Any photos of you and your fiancee?

(9) When did you propose?

It took about 10-15 mins, and seems like there are not so many K1 cases that go through Nairobi. We were probably one of two K cases that day. After these questions, she said she knows we were coming from Uganda and that they would try to get it to us by the following day. We were told to come back at 10am, which we did, and at around noon they had the visa ready for us. YAY!

One thing not clear to us is about vaccinations. We got what they told us, but they said my fiance would still have to get booster shots before leaving or at the port of entry. Any insight in this area for us?

Otherwise, we're just so happy to be done with this phase. For those who are still on this journey, please feel free to email us if you have any questions. Sometimes it was very unclear to us and if we can help make it clearer to any of you, we would be more than happy to help!

God bless!

Congrats!!!! :dancing:

Thanks everyone! I am really really fortunate. Vermont is still processing people in June. They have been at a stand still for like 3 months-- I can't believe I got so lucky! I'm sure now I'll have tonsss of questions for you all on the next phase of the process :)
