Thanks, AnnieMugaya!

We're still waiting for the interview date but pretty sure that Nairobi should have our package from NVC by now (it was sent on the 30th of August reportedly). It's a bit confusing how the interview date is going to be assigned, some of you said you called and scheduled it yourselves once they got your package but seems now that is not how it works anymore ???? I called Nairobi but the people who know answers to my questions isnt picking up the phone...

Anyone who has recently gone through this process have any insight for us??

Thanks so much!

Hi Taatabunny. I recently went thru the process and Nairobi Embassy will never send the package to you. All that has changed. Just call this number 020- 3636492 to schedule your interview. The you can go ahead and book for your medical at IOM. Call them on 020-2720060 or 0722879680 to book your appointment. All the forms you will find them on the Nairobi Embassy website under visa packets http://nairobi.usembassy.gov/immigrant_visas/visa-packets.html. Download the forms and fill them. Then prepare the rest of the documents. You will be fine. Do not hesitate to ask any questions. We are here to help one another. I wish you Gods blessings thru this journey.

Thanks so much LNK2000!

I've been trying to call the Immigration office for the last week and no one seems to be answering the phone there. Let us try to call the number you suggested above again today and see what they say. We'll keep you all posted on our process.

Good luck to everyone on this journey as well!

Hi All,

So i finally got through to the Embassy and this is what happened:

I called 020-3636492 as LNK2000 had suggested. Again no one picked up, so I called 020-3636000 which is the main line. I spoke nicely saying that I was a US citizen and have been trying to get through but with no luck, and that I have a case number for my K1 application. I think saying you have a case number is the key to getting information. Because almost immediately they said ok let us get you someone who can help. Seems the current method is once they have your case at the Embassy:

1. you collect all the necessary papers

2. fill out all the necessary forms listed on the Embassy website under K1

2. schedule the medical exam and have results in hand

3. then with all the above ready, schedule for the interview by calling the Embassy using the same numbers above (and she said the interviewed can be scheduled for the next day even for those not living in Nairobi and wanting to do it all at once)

It's so good to know at least what is expected of us to complete the process.

Thanks for everyone's help thus far, and hope this helps those who are embarking on this journey!

You are welcome Taatabunny. Its like the embassy deals differently with cases from outside. I wish you all the best in your journey. Hope you can get your interview soon. By the way have you booked for your medical appointment?

Sorry for being so quiet in here... as mentioned before, IOM wanted an 8-week lab culture to make sure -UG didn't have TB. They said they'd call her right away if anything did show up, and she hasn't heard from them, so... we're hopeful. She'll be back over in Nairobi on 4 October for IOM (get lab culture results, and presuming they're okay, get all her shots) and 5 October for the interview at the Embassy. Unfortunately, given the delay, and my work schedule, I can't go with her. :(

We had tribal and religious ceremonies in UG before I left (around the time that we would have gone to Nairobi for the interview if it hadn't been for the IOM stuff, and after the time that the Embassy had originally scheduled our interview in the papers she never received.) Now she just needs to get that visa so we can get her over to the HI side of the world and get the "legally recognized" wedding done, and continue with the paperwork.

If all goes well on 5 October, the hope is for her to arrive in the US in late October or early-mid November.

Oh, and yeah, it's totally easier (for whatever reason) for HI to get the Embassy to schedule appointments, calling from the US in the middle of the night there than for UG to call...

October 5 is coming up quick! I know all the delays have probably been maddening but she'll be here soon :) And I always noticed the same - much easier for me to get hold of them from here, waking up at 4 am to call or whatever, than for Sifa when he was there! They would never even talk to him!

"There was a boy with skin as dark as the earth and a girl with eyes as blue as the deep, and they loved each other so well that people could not tell them apart, for in their hearts there was no difference between them."

Aww that's a beautiful idea! Yeah the first time I saw it was right after Jack and I had to separate for the first time and it made me cry. It was just so fitting-- he actually calls me blue eyes and has since day one. I LOVE it too, and I'm sure we will have it framed in our house somewhere...

Thank you for all of your congratulations. We are now back in Kampala and here's the full story:

Travel and Accommodation We took Queens bus (queenscoach.com) from Nakumatt Kampala at 715am on Sunday 26th of September. They are a new bus company with very very good services, we recommend them to anyone who has to make this journey by bus. We booked at the Kenya Youth Hostel, walking distance from the IOM Medical Offices. The hostel was fair with nice staff and somewhat clean facilities. Most importantly for us, it was a very convenient location to IOM.

Medical Exam We had to be at IOM at 730am on Monday morning, so we started walking from the hostel at 7am. It took us less than 10mins to get there and by the time we came the whole place was already crowded with many others waiting for the same exam. At around 8 they had a short counseling session. After counseling they called each person by name to do their blood tests, then xray, exam, then vaccinations. It definitely does take one whole day and the cost for us was $255 ($143 medical exam, $112 vaccinations). We got the results the following day without any problems.

Interview We called the Embassy to schedule an interview on the same day we got the Medical Exam. I had to be very persistent in order to speak with someone, but when I finally got through and told them our coming from Uganda they had no problem scheduling the interview for us the same week. Since it was the last Wednesday of the month we were scheduled for Thursday 7am. At around 730 we were called to turn in all the necessary paperwork. At 8 we were called for fingerprinting. Then at 845 we were called for the interview. I went up to the window with my fiance, but the consular lady told me I could go sit down. During the interview, they asked my fiance these questions:

(1)What is your fiancee's name?

(2) Are you married?

(3) How long have you known your fiancee?

(4) What does she do?

(5) What do you know about your fiancee?

(6) Have you been to the US? (bc my fiance has a visitor's VISA and had come to the US earlier this year to visit my family)

(7) How long were you there?

(8) Any photos of you and your fiancee?

(9) When did you propose?

It took about 10-15 mins, and seems like there are not so many K1 cases that go through Nairobi. We were probably one of two K cases that day. After these questions, she said she knows we were coming from Uganda and that they would try to get it to us by the following day. We were told to come back at 10am, which we did, and at around noon they had the visa ready for us. YAY!

One thing not clear to us is about vaccinations. We got what they told us, but they said my fiance would still have to get booster shots before leaving or at the port of entry. Any insight in this area for us?

Otherwise, we're just so happy to be done with this phase. For those who are still on this journey, please feel free to email us if you have any questions. Sometimes it was very unclear to us and if we can help make it clearer to any of you, we would be more than happy to help!

God bless!

Congrats, Taatabunny! Our Ugandan half is flying to Nairobi today, picking up results from that looong lab culture and getting vaccinations tomorrow, and going for the interview Tuesday. Unfortunately, the other half has to work. On the other side of the planet. :(

We hope everything goes as well as it did for you!
