Hi all,

I saw this on the AOS how to's:

"A copy of the intending immigrant's birth certificate along with English translation. (If in any language other than English) "

Does the translation need to be done by some sort of 'official' agency, or something that I can do myself?

You can't do it yourself, but it doesn't have to be an agency.. you can get a teacher or someone you know who speaks your language and english fluently to do it...

My lawyer told me it was no problem for me to translate the documents because I certified that I was fluent in both languages.

That I know of you need to have it translated by a notary public, I mean, the translator needs to be a certified one. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The above poster is incorrect. You don't have to have the translation notarized or performed by a "certified translator."

Here are the instructions from USCIS:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

My lawyer advised me against certifying the translation myself, so I translated it and had a bilingual friend certify it. I know that some people do everything themselves without a problem.

Well, some people are more comfortable having a translation house do the translation. I have to admit I would not have known what to do with the all the beurocratic terms like "office of civil registry" and "rectangular stamp" if I did not use my friend's translation as a guide.
