well, it's kind of misleading. Because if it's say 80% of registered voters, that might only be 50% of eligible citizens, ya know?

I think there are way too many people who never even bother to register because of the standard my vote doesn't count kind of stuff.

On a tangential aside to that:

• some of them need a few history lessons (such as the fact that Texas was made a state of the US due to three one-vote margins in chain)
• the fact that there are groups abroad (AQ affiliates, Maoist guerillas, ...) who specifically threaten people so they will boycott voting--an implication that these groups recognise that each vote does count

It looks like 136.6 million Americans will have voted for president this election, based on 88 percent of the country's precincts tallied and projections for absentee ballots, said Michael McDonald of George Mason University. Using his methods, that would give 2008 a 64.1 percent turnout rate.

"That would be the highest turnout rate that we've seen since 1908," which was 65.7 percent, McDonald said early Wednesday.
