one ot style question ...

lots of people want tax breaks ... so which candidate is going to promote a tax incentive for people who commute on their bicycle more that 10 miles one way (>20 mile round trip)?

The tax break would be in the form of not paying gasoline tax. Seriously, if they'd just build some g-ddamn bike lanes (meaning bike roads/highways) in this country, we wouldn't need any tax breaks or such.

How awesome would it be to have a route that parallels I-70 (or US40) for instance, from coast to coast. Only needs to be 2-3 feet wide. Or a bike highway system that would allow me to ride from Greencastle to Indianapolis withOUT having to go way the hell out of my way because of the current highway structure. Not to mention the roads in/near Indy are Death waiting to happen. They've replaced I-70, they've replaced most of I-465; how hard would it have been to have added a bike lane to them?

there needs to be some sort of incentive ... just like all those "rumored" incentives for the hybrid automobiles that saved the owners $$$ at the pumps :P

it would be nice to have a good system of parallel roads for bicycles. Especially roads that kept all the idiots on 4-wheelers, dirt bikes, skate boards, etc off the roads. Rails to trails was a good concept ... only I've seen more trails used for "sunday stroll" use making them more hazardous than I-85 in ATL.

We have bike lanes all over the place here in the cities. As for hybrids, along with a rebate, free access to the carpool lane (regardless of how many are in the car) is a pretty good incentive, meaning not only are you getting superior mileage, but you're coasting past everyone else dragging ### in 10-20mph traffic.

That was a good read... thanks Charles.

I would dare say that the good evaluations had something to do with the fact his father was an Admiral. You don't make an Admiral's son look bad if you value your career.

while true, there's always the possibility that maybe he was that good.

Yeah, man!

And if it actually worked out well, in a few years, we might actually see some positive effects with nationwide health!

i can't wait for tomorrow to be over.

Why? Do you think all of this will be over after the election? HA! For 8 years there has been constant Bush Bashing. For 8 years before that constant Clinton attacks.

The only thing that you aren't going to see anymore is anything about Sarah Palin, and probably McCain. The fun is just beginning.

hmmm... you may be right...

but i don't remember people attacking Clinton as vehemently as Bush... i remember the attacks, but not like with the current administration.

but seriously, what is MSNBC going to do if Obama wins?

Add: 60% of USians believe in Noah's Arc....that a man lived to 900 years old, and got two of every species including trillions of bugs on a boat and had them all reproduce. And what with no woman, how did we get here?

Bahaha!

And if there were two human beings that produced all of us, then we are all truly connected and brothers and sisters.

Take that you racist and homophobic bunch!

Troublesome, yes.

I love that letter Platypius!

Funny, too.

Bike lanes exist in Chicago. HOV lanes are proposed by state government for our urban expressways as well.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

bike lanes in the city should be outlawed unless a cyclist is allowed to inflict serious damage to an azzholes car after the driver tries to hit a cyclist who is using the bike lane properly ... idiot drivers and poorly designed bike lanes make hitting a cyclist with a car easier than fishing in a barrel with a hand grenade.

True. Bike lanes should be placed apart from vehicular lanes.

Well, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News managed to survive while we had a Republican President and Congress, so MSNBC might be okay.

The only reason I think that might not happen though is that MSNBC already sucks in the ratings and a lot of people tune in because they wanted to hear someone a pissed off as they are at the current administration. I am a little concerned about Mr. Olberman's future though. He's not really that necassary on Sunday night football, and without Bush I think he is obsolete.

Yes, you read my mind...

i heard Olberman is going to sports full-time.

Of course, if McCain/Palin win... he'll probably be in business for at least another 4 years.

That might be true, dalegg. OTOH, imagine FOX if the Executive and Legislative branches turn Blue... quite a lot of material to gripe about. Nevertheless, once the initial bump in knee-jerks gives way to more relaxed acceptance that they ain't so darn bad after all... we'll see less polarization in the media since the public won't be demanding it as much.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

This may be true in San Francisco, hence why bike lanes are uncommon, because everything is so compact, but everywhere else around here, where there are bike lanes in the city, especially prominent in the San Jose/Santa Clara area (larger population and region than SF), there are bike lanes all over the place, especially on major streets with high density traffic. Accidents with cars hitting bicyclists are far fewer than car-on-car collisions. It's simply not a problem.
