Heya guys!

It's Magpie again -- just an update on things, I managed to find my parents' DOBs, thankfully. I now have a slight worry about my own birth certificate. The only copy we have is a fax sent to my dad (he wasn't in the country when I was born, figures), and I was born in India. It's a legitimate certificate, and I've lived here for most of my life, but I'm wondering whether they would be okay with a faxed copy.

Please help!

Magpie.

I really can't see them accepting a faxed copy of a BC, they have to be originals. I'm afraid I know nothing about India but is it possible to request another one from the place you were born?

Another suggestion would be to do a search in the Asia (South) subforum to see if anyone else from India has had the same problem? It might be worth a look.

Well, the problem with trying to get another one is that I'll have major cultural issues if my parents get wind of this. They're a tad extreme...but I'll see if I can ask the embassy.

It doesn't have to be the original. It does have to be a certified (official) copy though, so the fax won't work. It seems like the Indian embassy could help you though. :)

Thankums -- I've emailed them, and hopefully they'll get back to me quickly (the Indian embassy in the UK, that is). The US consular did say that I should bring it along to the interview anyway, but maybe I'll get a proper copy before then. Wah, this is so stressful!

Hope you get some good news from the embassy soon!

I was supposed to take my birth certificate (original) to my AOS interview, but didn't have it as the US mail system somehow ate it when my mum sent it to me with tracked mail  Anyway, the interviewer asked for it and all I had was a (very dark) uncertified photocopy of the short version, that didn't even have my parents' names on. She said that really I ought to have had it, but since she had no other issues with us, we were approved anyway. She just said I should make sure I had an original (long version, including parents' names) certificate for future use. Luckily it wasn't a problem for us not having it, though we were really stressed out about it!

Removing conditions:

10/9/10 - Package sent to Vermont

10/13/10 - NOA1 date, received 10/18

Thank you so much...I was really worried. I've been trying to contact the Indian embassy here, but they haven't gotten back to me yet. Knight did find a snippet online about someone who had a similar situation, and he said it shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as you check out. That makes me feel a LOT better -- thank you again, Jon&Lindsey! I won't slack off about trying to get a proper copy, but at least I can show the one I have. It does have my parents' names, the hospital name and the place I was born, so at least that's included.

You're welcome. Hope everything goes ok, even if you can't get anything from the embassy in time.

Well, I still can't get to the Indian embassy, so blah...I guess I'll see how it goes, and I'll keep trying. =D Thanks for the support.
