Our dog sleeps outside our bedroom door in her own bed.

She used to sleep with me in Canada and kept me awake all night, going from under the covers, to outside the covers, to back under the covers (when she got hot and cold).

I'm glad my husband forbid it when she came to live with us in the U.S.

Hubby used to sleep with the dog on the bed before I arrived, but there's no way I'm getting woken up 10x a night and sleeping in a bed covered in dog hair. She sheds a LOT - he actually likes it better now and admits there was really no room for all of us. She has her own bed out in the living room and before we go to bed we take her out, give her a snack and settle her in her own bed. I guess I have less tolerance since my job is working with animals, and at bedtime I just want to be clean and finally hair-free! Also, the owners I see having dominance/behaviour problems with their dogs are way more likely to be the bed-sleeping dogs than those with their own place to sleep at night.

Your situation is exactly like mine. My husband used to let his dog Dale (a 95lb husky) sleep in bed. For nearly 10 years. When I came along I said - nope - no more of that. Which has led to whole host of behavioral problems between Dale and I. He resents me for making him sleep on the floor outside the bedroom. Chris doesn't reinforce the behavior of sleeping on the floor so I have to be the bad guy most of the time.

This is in fact why I asked the question. Am I nuts for not wanting to share the bed with a dog?

We live in Hawaii with a husky that came from Alaska, you can only imagine the amount of hair I have to contend with in a day!

My cat has devised an ingenious plan of slowly knocking items off of my dresser (earings, clips, cell phone) when he wants me to wake up and open the door for him to leave my room.

You're not nuts! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this :)

Personally, much as I love my animals, I am the boss and I don't want an animal to be trying to dominate me. I think changing to the dog sleeping outside the bedroom worked in our situation as we have been totally consistent with the new night routine and hubby has been completely supportive. Also, I am the dog's new best friend as I take her out running with me everyday, which she loves, and I am home more as I cannot yet work, so she enjoys the company.

Our dog sleep with us but he is 3.5 pounds - he does not take space at all. He only bothered me because I am a light sleeper and he tends to go in & out of covers once until he is settled sleeping between us or on the edge of the bed. We did not allow him to sleep with us until his mom watched him for 2 weeks while we were on vacation & since them he would not sleep in his own bed in his cage. I find him sleep in his own bed is when my husband or I toss & turn too much & it disturbs his sleep.
