So THAT'S why coke tastes different in the USA

I'm not a big soft drink person, but I always enjoyed a coke here and there until I went to school in the USA and totally lost my taste for it. I thought it was just me until a friend recently came to visit me in Canada and said, "I have to have a Coke while I'm here!" I asked why and he told me that it tastes better in Canada because we use sugar where in the USA they replace much of the sugar with high-fructose corn syrup! This is because the USA has tariffs on sugar which make it too expensive to produce soft drinks with so much sugar.

Apparently this is the case with many products including ketchup! Who knew? Just thought I'd share because there are probably a few people who find thing taste just a little different in the USA. Next time check the label... maybe it is the corn syrup!

Almost everything here has HFCS! You have to check labels carefully.

And have you seen that commercial endorsing HFCS? Laughable.

I know I have seen those! I just shook my head in disbelief the first time I saw one.

Not to be a butinski... but you're right, besides the water (which can taste different) it's the sweetener that can (and is likely) different, both in type and amount. Coca Cola only produces the syrup.

FYI - Germany is primarily a Coca Cola only country (no Pepsi please)..

Yup. Next time I drive in and out of Canada, I will be loading it with real Coke.

Not an addict, but I do not want to ingest corn syrup. Bleh!

HFCS is the bane of my existence. I can't drink my favourite Ocean Spray juice because there's too much added ####### to it, and if I want it "lite" -- well, shall I have chemical sweetener with my 100% juice?????? Blah! The damn stuff is in everything and it drives me nuts.

Yes, Coke here is definately different, as is ketchup and in fact most things that have sugar in them, we have had quite a few conversations about it, including this one:

What the heck did they do to the Heinz Ketchup???

Yea, I've seen those commercials before, my husband and I just look at each other with "#######?" expressions. *sigh* We avoid HFCS like the plague (other than him drinking the occasional pop), but luckily the nearest market is Whole Foods which makes shopping easier. The weirdest place I've found HFCS is in Pepperidge Farm bread...

HFCS is in almost ALL bread in the US. Aunt Millie's is one of just a few brands that has an "HFCS-Free" line of breads.

HFCS is also in the sausage here.

Anything remotely sweet has HFCS in it, unless it's imported.

I bought a bread maker this week, it's on its way - can't stand to eat packaged bread here (except for a few loaves I have found in bakeries).

We've had several threads here in the Canada forums about HFCS, lists upon lists of foods containing HFCS and how to avoid them.

My parents have been bringing down/sending many different products from home because I simply cannot stand the taste of half the ####### down here.

Cereal, bread, pop, juice, jam, granola bars, soup, pickles..it's in EVERYTHING!!!! Blah. Even most of the chocolate tastes so gross.

I had my friend bring me so much stuff when she visited...tons of good old CANADIAN campbell's tomato soup, bread and butter pickles, granola bars, cereal...etc. etc.

Even the toothpaste down here has it and tastes like poop.

I'll be stocking up when I visit, that's for sure!

This is just a side note...I miss marble cheese so much...they don't have it here in Jersey for some odd reason...

They have this weird Monterey Jack/Cheddar mix but it tastes NOTHING like good old kraft marble cheese from back home. I'll be bringing some with me when I visit after Christmas.

Good for you on the bread maker.

I make bread too but when I can't, Nick and I buy Arnolds Brand bread. It even advertises "No High Fructose Corn Syrup" right on the package.

They have some great varieties, Health Nut, 7 Grain, 12 Grain, even a 15 Grain. We both enjoy it a lot.
