It has to be called marriage by the federal government - not "civil union" or

"domestic partnership" BS.

If gay marriage is not recognized at the federal level or called something other than "marriage",

gay couples will not be allowed to file federal taxes as married (either jointly or separately)

or file immigration petitions for their gay spouses.

In states where gay marriage is allowed, can two brothers marry each other or would that be considered incest?

Of course that is incest and plain stupid as well

Why WOULDN'T that be considered incest?

Because that is the type of argument the prop 8 supporters try and bring up, saying if gays are allowed to marry then lets just allow anyone/anything to marry, if they want to marry their dog why cant they :bonk: They dont have any solid arguments as to why gays shouldnt be allowed to marry, just that it threatens their so called sanctity of marriage

why is there a law against consentual relations/marriage between siblings?

I tried to google for info but could find no cogent reason. There is the current case of the couple in Germany that I found on Wikipedia. They have 4 children.

Discrimination of choice vs. discrimination based on who the person is....that's the different. That's why the law can prohibit a man from marrying a goat, but shouldn't be able to prevent two gay men from marrying.

But not in Sudan:

I'm so laughing my ### off at all of the ads being run here about prop 8 and all of the ####### about gays in school, gays everywhere. They're gonna turn your kids gay! They're gonna bring gay marriage into church! They're gonna bring gay marriage into your house! Yes, indeed it's as clear as day that there's no logic whatsoever behind Prop 8. And if it fails, they won't let the people's voice (which those who brought up the proposition supposedly respect) stop them from getting signatures to re-introduce it once again. What's turning less and less people on here to the bans of gay marriage is the clear disrespectful agenda some have toward the rights of others. One thing I'm proud about Californians for are they're clearly becoming smarter and more progressive, as they realize where the real issues and priorities lie.

I'm not one to care for polls, as they don't determine the outcome, but I see quite a lot more support for gay marriage today than the last vote. More people here are realizing that gay marriage isn't all that bad, now that we've been having them. More are realizing that those who keep pushing this are the ones with a real agenda and there's no reason to waste state resources promoting bigotry and removing rights against gays of marriage. It's ironic that SF has one of the highest, if not THE highest, gay population in the country, which is not that much really, and those of us around them know they're going to live their lives how they see fit, and my approval of their relationships is not a requisite, nor would they make my marriage mean any less.

I have not heard or even read much about Prop 8 but the story line seems fairly simple.

Why would two brothers not be allowed to wed, or even a mother and son?

If the concept is "people have the right to decide their own adult relationships, why not open it to everyone?

Even though I am against these alternative marriages, the eventual nationwide passage is just a matter of time.

Of course all this feeds into the growing Private school business as many people do not want their children taught in school that Homosexuality is healthy and normal.

Some of us are able not to use slippery slopes, use logical arguments, and critical thinking. Incest is not the same as homosexuality, therefore these arguments get debated individually.

And that's fine with me if they go to private school. They still pay taxes, that means less kids in the class, better learning environment. I'd thank those parents for their taxes and their contribution to my child's education. ;)

No one says you have to accept homosexuality at all. However, your acceptance is certainly not a requisite. There are no gay marriages in North Carolina, but there are here, and experience having them around shows there is nothing wrong with them at all.

Obviously not.

Why would two brothers not be allowed to wed, or even a mother and son?

If Prop 8 fails, nothing changes. The California constitution and marriage laws stay intact. The existing laws against consanguinity in marriage aren't changed. The status quo remains as is.

If Prop 8 passes, the only thing which changes is that same sex marriage is outlawed by the California constitution. The proposition ONLY forbids same-sex marriage. It doesn't say anything about brothers marrying sisters, nor about mothers marrying sons. Yes, Prop 8 would forbid brothers marrying brothers, but only because those brothers are the same sex, not because they were born in the same family with the same parents.
