INteresting replies :)

FYI I do teach in a Catholic school.

So another question....if Prop 8 passes, then will all the newly-married gay couples find their marriages no longer legal?

The bottom line to me is, why the heck does it matter? I mean really...to say "the sanctity of marriage is being sullied" (or w/e) is just ridiculous. Divorce does the same thing if you want to look at it that way, and divorce certainly isn't illegal...

Yes, but therein lies some of the hypocrisy. Mind you, divorce being 'acceptable' is relatively recent. Well, in the current cycle of appropriate behaviour anyway.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

That's an interesting question, and nobody really knows the answer for certain. The courts would have to rule. The opinions of legal scholars are somewhat split.

I know I'm not a California voter, but it does affect me, as my brother recently married his partner of 12 years -- so I hope Prop 8 fails.

My point was, that any union that wasn't church sancitifed should surely get the 'legal union' label as apposed to marriage, regardless of the sexual makeup of the couple. To call a male/female union marriage and a male/male or female/female union a legal union would be rather silly in my opinion.

I've always thought that legal marriage and religious marriage were two very different things. I like the idea of using two different labels.

Homosexual couples should have access to legal marriage and all the legal rights and responsabilities that heterosexual couples have. Then decision about whether religious marriage should be open to gay and lesbian couples could reside with each religion institution.

If gays are allowed to marry then the processing times for immigration visas will be longer for all. That alone is a reason to support proposition 8. :o)

Exactly how would that lengthen the time for immigration visas? You clearly have no idea what prop 8 is all about

In states where gay marriage is allowed, can two brothers marry each other or would that be considered incest?

Of course that is incest and plain stupid as well

Why WOULDN'T that be considered incest?

Because that is the type of argument the prop 8 supporters try and bring up, saying if gays are allowed to marry then lets just allow anyone/anything to marry, if they want to marry their dog why cant they :bonk: They dont have any solid arguments as to why gays shouldnt be allowed to marry, just that it threatens their so called sanctity of marriage

That's encouraging although in a way, if Prop 8 passes, it could be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court and hopefully be ruled unconstitutional, which would then set precedent for all states to follow California.

That would be good. USCIS would have to recognize gay unions.

That would liven things up a bit here on VJ.
