Hey all!

I haven't posted in quite a bit... craziness getting ready for Dave's big move here.

He flies from Vancouver to Toronto on the 7th, I meet him in Toronto on the 9th, and then we drive back here to Boston.

Ended up using the U-Pack folks for the move, I'll be sure to write a review... but so far, they've been the cheapest and easiest option for us.

Has anyone converted a canadian license here in Massachusetts? The RMV website says they need a driving history... Dave got me his driving abstract from B.C. and that was good enough for the insurance company... but is that all he needs for the RMV as well?

SSN Card or valid, current U.S. or Non-U.S. Passport

Document proving date of birth

Document proving signature

Document proving Massachusetts residency

Out-of-state License* (may also be used as a Primary document to prove date of birth or signature, but cannot be used for both)

* If the out of state license does not have a photo, an acceptable photo ID from the list of Primary and Secondary documents is required.

If the license is from Canada, Mexico, or US Territory (including Puerto Rico) a driving record not more than 30 days old is required.

And if you loose ur BC copy, I think 1 can downlaod ianother copy right from the internet, or they can email it

I converted mine.

I went to Ontario's Ministry of Transportation, and requested a driving record that covered the past three years.

It listed when I was licensed first, any speeding tickets, etc.

They took and kept it.

I also needed proof of residency (I used a copy of our lease with both names on it), but any utility bill will work as well.

I also needed one form of photo id, something with my signature on it, and something with my birth date on it.

The whole process took about an hour. I went around 3pm. I'd advise going a bit sooner if possible, but I guess it depends on which location you go to.

When Dave moves here, we're staying with my family until we find something we want to buy.

What the heck would prove residency then here? We're not going to have a lease or utility bills for the moment... would immigration documents work possibly?

My god, it seems like such a headache to switch it over. How long can one use their canadian license before you HAVE to switch it over?

HAS to be something like utility or lease.

RMV sucks that way. Maybe you could put a second phone line in Dave's name? A landline would work as a "utility". Either that or ask your parents if maybe Dave's name could also be on the gas or water bill? You could always change it again later, but for the time being it would work for proving residency.

Yep yep, it has to be a lease, or utility, or something to that effect. I have my name on nothing because we are moving, so it was pointless. However, the phone/satellite/ internet/ will be in my name once we move so I'll be all set.

You'd think after all this immigration paperwork, the rmv would be a snap!! hahahahaaha

be glad all he needs is his name on a bill to establish residency...some of us had to wait for our EAD card or permanent residency card!

About getting a license in the us, is our canadian driver's license (quebec or any other province) enough so that you dont have to pass any written or driving exam? Do they just deliver you the license upon all the documents you are providing them?

I am gonna move from quebec to illinois.

Regarding drivers licenses, each state differs, so check out the DMV for that state. Virginia there was no test, just a simple exchange. Some States, you do the whole 9 yards!! http://www.dmv.org/

Yeah, Georgia makes you do the whole nine yards, although I was told I could drive on my Canadian License for up to a year while i wait for the proper immigration documents to be processed. I used a bank statement with my address locally and my name on it to establish physical residency. Perhaps when you add your fiance/husband's name to your account you will be able to take in a joint bank statement showing his address instead of a utility bill?
