Do you know if I am allowed to volunteer while I am waiting for work rights?

Absolutely. As long as you aren't getting paid you should be fine.

Yep, and that's what my SO is going to do while awaiting EAD. Keeps away boredom, but more importantly will give him a U.S. reference for job-hunting.

I'm doing this, but don't set your heart too firmly on one place, as some organisations need to run background checks, and as a result only allow greencard holders to volunteer.

I was looking forward to volunteering at a hospital and was unable to.

You can only volunteer if it is an position that normally would not be a paid. You can make coffee and the Red Cross, but not at Starbucks.
