Having Children

Claudeth and I have had some discussions about having a baby. I am a bit worried about it because I am 59. My Father died when he was 53 and I was only 9 and I was cheated from being able to grow up with him. I don't want that to happen but then again, I would love to share the blessing of a child with my wonderful wife, best friend and life's companion.

i guess this all depends on if you think you can handle it. if you do, have lots of insurance.

There is no guarentee any of us will live through today. I, personally, cannot live with "what ifs".

It's something to have serious discussions about and make a decision both of you can live with. And, I agree with Almaty, if you are this worried, please make sure they are taken care of if that were to happen to you.

I hope you guys figure it out!

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Having a child is a decision between the two of you.

If you are worried on the uncertainty of the future.... that is the reality of life. We could not change it.

Wish you the best!!!

My friend is also married to a guy around your age. They have a three-year old daughter. So I think you are probably okay.

Ok as compared to what? Heath Ledger died at the age of 28....

There are risks and responsibilities that both parties to this decision must be aware of... As long as the affected parties understand and accept these risks .... then it is, what it is....

YMMV

You can definitely do it if you are ready and willing. Do keep in mind that the probabilities for complications for the fetus increases exponentially as the mother ages. You would probably be required to go through a genetics analysis and undergo a number of exams...

I do wish you the very best as you consider taking on life's greatest role as a parent! It will be the most rewarding experience.

This is a subject that should have been fully discussed and decisions made before marriage took place. I am from a family where my father was old enough to be my mothers father and I know that I grew up hating the fact that he was too old to do most of the things young dads did with their sons and I hated everyone thinking he was my grandfather.

Stop and think of what you might be putting a child through.

Having a child is a game changer. Although 59 is not old, do you really want to spend your 70's with a teenager who knows more about life than you do based on his/her limited life experience? If you think having a child will bring you and your wife closer and cement your relationship you could be sadly mistaken. You will likely be 2nd fiddle, with the needs of the child always having priority. Your child would not have the benefit of having your presence for most of his/her lifetime. Something to consider.

I see! Well, then scientifically, it's totally fine. Just all the emotional factors that others have discussed here... It's tough and it's deeply personal... I don't doubt that your wife can guide your child brilliantly through life, though the child may miss out by not having you there for all the activities and future milestones (marriage/grand children)...

I do appreciate all your input. We have discussed about having children and we both felt we needed to be together without that influence until we get adjusted. We are getting closer to that point now and are feeling somewhat more comfortable.

I love kids so don't see that as a problem and don't sleep all that much so probably would die doing the middle of the night thingys either.

I guess only time will tell on what we decide. I did ask my 33 year old daughter what she thought about having a sibling 35 years younger than herself and she gave me the strangest look :P
