We had 12,000, but was cut back to 6,000, believe it's called a deterrent. We certainly can't use them without killing ourselves, just using a fraction of that number would kill most of us. The lucky ones will get it instantly, the unfortunate ones would suffer a very long painful death. Some have questioned here why we are permitted to have this deterrent and other nations are not. Mostly, because we are a responsible and just society where the others are maniacs. Is this treason or common sense?

This is an ace in the hole for us, but since Japan, where it was claimed the use of these weapons ended the war, well that wasn't true at all, so happens the Soviets after doing their part in Germany declared war on Japan at the same time these bombs were built. The Japanese knew they couldn't fend off two huge nations and agreed to surrender to us rather than to Stalin.

But all of our wars since then have been conventional requiring ground troops that we are in vast short supply of using so-called conventional weapons.

If any nation uses nuclear weapons, would be an instant enemy of the rest of the world, so why to we have them? A deterrent of course.

  • reprocess out the degraded material (some of it converts to unusable form, such as Pu-239 --> Pu-240)
  • update the trigger from obsolescent to state-of-art electronics

Actually Americium-241 ingrowth is a problem though Pu-240 is a problem too but not for the reason you state. Pu-239 does not turn into Pu-240. I've worked at several nuclear weapons facilities.
