Sponsor Attending Interview?

I know that the sponsors are not necessarily required to attend the interview but is it recommended or just something that is up to each couple? My wife doesn't really want to take more time off work to come to the interview but I would her to be there. And I guess if it's something that is recommended I can "force" her to come. But I'm a bit disappointed that she doesn't feel the need to come if she can. I guess I'm being a bit selfish but wanted to get everyone's input on this.

Also, is there a preference for the embassy in terms of pre-paid express envelope for the returning of the visa?

My checklist for the interview is: (please let me know if there are other recommendations for items to bring)

Everything else I sent in with my DS-230 to the NVC since I am getting my CR-1.

08/25/2008 - AOS Fee Bill and DS-3032 Generated

08/30/2008 - Letter Recieved

09/02/2008 - AOS Fee Bill Paid and DS-3032 Choice of Agent e-mail sent

09/03/2008 - AOS Fee Bill Recorded as Paid

09/10/2008 - NVC sends DS-3203 Receipt Confirmation

09/10/2008 - IV Fee Bill Available and Paid

09/11/2008 - IV Fee Bill Processed - PAID, Coversheet Generated

09/11/2008 - Following directions on James' Shortcuts for creating DS-230 Package

09/18/2008 - Sent in I-864 and DS-230 (FedEx Overnight)

09/29/2008 - NVC Case Completed!

09/??/???? - Packet never received (sent in with James' Shortcuts as soon as bill was paid)

12/03/2008 - Interview - APPROVED!

12/04/2008 - Visa Received

No need for ur wife to be there, mine wasn't!! The interview itself is like 10 minutes long MAX!! If you wanted to make a holiday out of it sure, but there is no requirement. Save the $$$ and use it for a holiday

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Flames is correct.. not necessary at all.. but I wanted the moral support.. hubby came, but he wasn't required.

Thanks Flames and Emancipation, good to know. I guess it will be a solo vacation for me. I'm going to spend a few days there at least photographing the city. At least I can something more out of it than just an interview. :)

Everything else I sent in with my DS-230 to the NVC since I am getting my CR-1.

As far as the pre-paid envelope, it has to be an Xpresspost mailer, and it has to be the largest one they carry (30.5cm x 39.4cm). If you live in Quebec or Ontario you can get the Regional one (its cheaper), otherwise you'll have to get the National one. If you show up at the consulate with the wrong type or size they'll send you out to get the correct one. Don't forget to ask for the 'signature required' sticker too! Its not technically required, but it would be silly to risk wasting all the time and money invested in getting that visa just to avoid paying another $1.50 for the added security. :)

My husband was not at our interview in Vancouver. He was only going to come at first because he was going to be on business in Seattle, and would drive up. We were going to spend a week in Vancouver after the interview. Business plans fell through, and we decided I'd go it alone. We thought we'd spend the money on a trip once I was down here. The interview was breezy-peezy and I spent 5 days in Vancouver on my own. I had a lovely holiday on my own!

To each their own. If you have the money for her to come up, or she has the time available to do so...please let her know if you'd really like her to come. Don't swallow!
