When can I learn to drive?

Does anyone know the restrictions for getting a learner's permit? I never took a driving test in England, and so its not like I have an international license I can use for a while... I need to start from scratch, here in the US.

Do I need to wait until I have my green card, or can I begin to learn on a K1? I understand that the license is a national form of ID, so am expecting you have to be a resident... but am hoping I can learn soon!!

Anyone know?

Thanks!

read through the California DMV website, and they had a list of legal requirements... one of course, was "permenant residency", but also on the list was "Employment Authorization Card".... hmmmm.... I got an EAD stamp on my I94 when I arrived, maybe I could show them that!?

I'm not positive about this, but if you could, I think the expiration of your permit would be based on the expiration of your I-94. probably more practical to wait till you have an EAD Card.

CA will want evidence of lawful residence much longer than the 90 days of the I-94, EAD card or green-card will be needed for a license.

I have read of some who do get a license on a K-1 only to have the license expire when legal status ends, 90 days after entry (I-94 expiration)

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

another thing, if your SSN is in your maiden name and you use your husband's name as your married name, make sure to go back to SSA to have your name changed when you receive your EAD or green card. otherwise, you name will come up as no match with DMV.

In order to get a DL in the state of California, you need to have either your EAD or green card. In the mean time, you can get a Driver's License Manual and start studying it so you can pass your written test and get your Driver's Permit.
