Does anyone know if someone can die from boredom during the wait for an EAD?

My husband didn't get a Temporary EAD when he arrived at JFK and now I'm afraid he's going to die of boredom while he waits to get the Permanent one. We applied for his SS# Monday (no problem) and went to the local USCIS office Friday where they told us his 90 days will be over before he receives a Temp EAD if we try to apply for one.. so there's nothing we can do....

Anyone have any suggestions for what he might do to occupy his time while I'm off working all day? He's going stir crazy and I'm too tired to "entertain" when I get home from work...

Too bad he got here in the middle of Fall term or I could send him to some ESL courses at the local community college... Thursday he went for a walk and got lost after walking about 7 miles from the house..... (tomorrow we will have Bus Riding 101)

I'm beginning to think I might have to send him to visit some relatives or something until we get closer to the end of this wait....

Any suggestions for ways to keep a 47 year old Egyptian busy in the Pacific Northwest would be welcomed.. :)

if you're serious about the ESL, try a few more places... I've been volunteering at a literacy place while I'm waiting for my EAD, and we start classes all the time; there are no 'terms' or 'semesters' as such :)

if that doesn't come through you could buy some do-at-home ESL stuff, or borrow some from the local library...

and for simple 'stop the boredom' stuff, volunteering is the thing, I think... if using English is a problem, I bet there are places where it would be less critical, eg helping in a garden or something :)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

It's the same at the place where my husband is studying English, they start classes every 2 months for day classes, and any time for night classes, so a community college is not your only option.

Also, he needs to understand that there is nothing you can do. That's how it is with all K1 or K3 visas, you gotta wait until the AOS is filed. The longer you wait to file, the longer it will take for his EAD or green card to arrive.

And no, no one has ever died from boredom. ^_^

Does he have a hobby he can work on? Anything around the house he can paint or fix or something?

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

I've been in the Pacific Northwest for almost 2 years with the ability to work and haven't found a job. He doesn't know what boredom is yet.

Unless he likes hunting, fishing or hiking in which case he will fit in well with the locals.

My niece's husband hunts bears with bows and arrows, where he finds bears who can use bows and arrows I don't know.

The DVR and Netflix are wonderful inventions, I personally manage to fill the time watching all those tv shows I missed out on whilst being to busy back in the old country - I'm currently working my way through the sopranos and annoying my wife with my New Jersey gangster impressions!!

Combined with reading, excercising, and house work thats pretty much my life at the moment! I'm sure when I eventually get a job that I'll look back and wish I'd done something more productive with my time, learn a language, volunteer somewhere, but right now all I want to do is find out whether Tony's going to get wacked or not.

I guess I was lucky, as I have to do exams to work in my profession here, so kept busy doing that (didn't feel very lucky at the time though  ). I also prepared to start a craft business - bought supplies, made prototypes, experimented, made more products, designed website ready to go, etc (everything apart from actually starting the business and selling). That really helped with the boredom!

I spent a year in a small house in Florida that didn't have central A/C... stupid crappy window units! I'm glad we finally moved!! I was used to the highs in the summer being the mid 70's.. in that stupid house it was closer to the mid 80's with the A/C! Anyway, I spent a year sitting on my ####### going nutz watching "free" cable TV that our ghetto landlord was charging us for.. stupid Dr Phil!

I did the usual, house work, many, many repairs... I tried some yard work but I have to admit I never dug in sand before! I cooked, cleaned up the place.. did the laundry.. put up a line and latterly waited an hour for our stuff to bake dry on the line before bringing them in!

If I could do it all over again and assuming we had the cash (which we didn't then) I'd have went and became re certified over here. If your husband has a trade, skill or profession and if that needs brought up to "spec" in the US now is an excellent time to do it. I really wish I had have used my year to help build up my US education before going out into the wilds of job hunting!

Good Luck!

Waiting for the EAD seems like such a catch-22 - if you have money, there is a lot of great stuff you can do in all the time you have available. However, as you cannot work, you don't have enough money, and when you can work and do, you will no longer have the time (generalization I know, but you get the idea). That drove me crazy, even though I did have stuff I needed to do!

My fiance is really worried what I will get up to when I adventually get there, I am so busy here all the time I just dont know what I will do when I get there................he said he will be locking away all the power tools, at least he has an acre of land so there will be a lot of lawn moving going on, so I suppose I will be watching grass grow instead of paint drying ha ha
