What is a granola? (aside from a grain cereal?)

Is this a prairie dweller reference?

No, a granola is a neo-hippie.

You know the kinds of people who spend their summers planting trees and playing the bongos.

 I have a friend.. that's EXACTLY what he did last summer.. oh sooooo funny.. his pics on FB were priceless!!!

Wait wait wait... did he wear hemp jewelery and grow dreds?

Tree planters.. ahh gotta love em.

TOTALLY and lived in a straw house!!!

Thats fabulous. I have a friend who went out and came back a totally different person too. I mean she had it in her but she came back a shining full fledged tree hugger. Wore sea shells in her hair and always had a bottle of bubbles for blowing in her homemade patchwork bag.

Amen to that. I had a great friend in highschool that turned granola in Grade 12. She spent the next years going to BC, planting trees, getting dreads, wearing hemp, and being very environmentally conscious.

Being environmentally conscious is a super thing! But man was she out there. She smelled a lot.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I hear ya.

I don't think I could be a granola, I love my shampoo, and I hate incense.

Plus I wore a hemp bracelet once given to me by the same friend I am speaking of and it gave me a rash.

Awe.. now I do love hemp.. a lot.. but i guess the whole living off the grid sorta sucks.. I do love the internet :)

Come to think of it, my granola friend updated his FB regularly from "the woods".. wonder how that worked?

Oh they may be granola but they love the internet and their cell phones. They can get updates on the latest protests and conspiracy theories.

When I was in highschool we moved to Maui for a time and our place was on the small road to the beach. There was a constant stream of hippies/granola's etc walking to the beach with their guitars on the back. There was an area they all lived in like tents or in tree houses or something near by. Now all I need to do is drive 20 mins to Boulder and I see the same thing 2 decades later...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I live in Pahoa and that's pretty much the scene on this part of the island. The hippies here have no showers, no cars and live in tents, but damn it they can afford a $3.00 cup of coffee each morning and are always talking on their cell phones while hitch hiking out to stoner central on the beach.

And thetreble - I can confirm that Albertans have a distaste for Ontarians and refer to Toronto as America. I've lived out west for 27 years and have heard those kinds of comments from oodles of people. I can confirm that I have also made a comment like that a time or two. (I'm less bitter about living in Edm now).

I always wondered what on earth they did for a living. The ones I used to see did nothing in the afternoon but strum out strung out on the beach it seemed. Could never figure out how they could afford anything, but they seemed to be able to afford things (well other then soap and shampoo)...

My co-worker and I were talking about Wegman's at work today. She moved down here from Western NY, and she misses Wegman's. And being able to walk around town. Can't do that here. People think you're crazy, or lost your license for DUI

Most people I know out west are transplanted Ontarians. They couldn't handle the winters. Wimps :P

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

We had some wet snow yesterday and every one in Jersey and PA went bananas. They actually closed down whole sections of major routes.
