in short: yes, you would probably have difficulties trying to work with just a SSN; it's illegal, and very few people would probably want to take you on anyway... I know it's difficult having to wait; I'm in the same position, but you don't want to risk major problems for the sake of waiting a few months, do you?

and no, unfortunately you can't just do some of the process now and the rest later... well, you CAN, but you'd have to pay for the whole lot all at once anyway, so it wouldn't help you to wait; once you've paid you may as well file all the papers at once (I assume you're talking about adjustment of status, and the $1010 fee that covers applications for EAD and AP and all that; if you're not, please disregard my answer and wait for someone else to contribute ;) )

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Yeah, it sucks. But, it's the way it is. You have to get that EAD or your GC to be able to find a job. Beg and borrow to get the money if you have to.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

You cannot work legally with your SS # alone, you either need your EAD or green card to do it legally. You can file for EAD only since it's less expensive and then once you have the money for the AOS, file for it later. So the total cost would be $1,350 instead of $1,010.
