My husband speaks English, Spanish, French and a little Tagalog. Four languages. And I speak English, Tagalog, Ilocano and a little Spanish.

me: English fluent

Basic French (was fluent but got rusty), Spanish, and Moroccan Arabic.

Can get by in an Elementary conversation in Portuguese.

Technically, just English. But I've studied several others, just not to fluency. Below's my list of stuff I studied. Do many others here dabble in languages?

- Spanish (3 yrs + grew up around it, just didn't keep up with it enough for fluency)

- Ancient Greek (I bet there's not many people here that can say they studied it, and I basically remember NOTHING. 4 semesters and every semester it was a different dialect... practically a different language. Horrible mistake to study it!)

- French (the first course of Rosetta Stone :P I can't pronounce that stuff. Had no real practical use of it, so I quit studying.)

- German (slowly trying since my SO's German. Again, having trouble with spelling & pronunciation!)

My SO speaks German, English, and a little French.

Tied the knot (legal ceremony, part one) – January 26th, 2008 (kinda spontaneous)

AOS: Mailed V-Day; received February 15th, 2007 – phew!

I-485 application transferred to CSC – March 12th, 2008

Travel/Work approval notices via email – April 23rd, 2008

Green card/residency card: email notice of approval – August 28th, 2008 yippeeeee!!!

Funny-looking card arrives – September 6th, 2008 :)

Mailed request to remove conditions – July 7, 2010

Landed permanent resident approved – August 23rd, 2010

Second funny looking card arrives – August 31st, 2010

Well, let's see...

Italian (mother tongue)

Very fluent in English

Fluent in French and Finnish (though they've both got a bit rusty)

Reasonably fluent in German

Basic Spanish (understand it quite well, can't really speak or write it though)

Took Swedish classes for three years

Myself: German (native), English (fluent, 13 years of education), French (fluent, 11 years of education) and some basic Turkish (only 4 months of education and living in Ankara).

My fiancé: English (native), French (got a bit rusty but still very good), a few words in Turkish, now learning German :)

I just love being able to communicate with people from different places and I think that without the respective language you only understand the respective culture half way. To me culture and language go hand in hand.

I am already now glad that our kids will probably get the opportunity to learn English and German from the very beginning. Makes life a lot easier. :-)
