A few years back my friend had an interview with her husband and had a lawyer present also, since she had overstayed a very long time and was quite worried about the outcome. The interview was not as smooth as she would have liked, the IO absolutely grilled my friend's husband (USC) and he got quite flustered with her quick firing questions at him and forgot his wife's correct year of birth, amongst other things. They were left in the room for a few minutes - my friend is adamant that when they do that, they are watching you through a two way mirror. When the interview was over, even the lawyer breathed a sigh of relief, and said "that didn't go too well..." Anyway, all that to say that even after a seemingly not so great interview, they were approved and now years later my friend is happy and going for Citizenship soon. Don't necessarily count yourselves out until you see it in black and white!

Couldn't you just have a few friends type a letter stating that you two are a happily married couple. And that they have joined you on many occasions such as dinners, or other activities in which both of you were together. That type of letter would probably more convincing that adding someone to your lease, or bills. When we did our interview they were more worried about what we knew of each other, birth dates, had I met or talked to her parents was she married before. In fact we still don't a joint bank account, the only thing I added her to was the electricity bill.
