Hello - I have some questions that I believe are specific to the I-134 document. In this document, I need to show that I can financially support my future fiance. A few questions about that:

1.) What is a good amount of money to have in savings/checking? What is a safe salary?

2.) Does length of employment for your current job matter? I ask this as I am considering switching companies/jobs just before I might start the K1 process.

3.) What should I be concerned about in this particular area?

I realize some of my questions are vague, so I will gladly expand on them if necessary.

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

1) I did NOT used assets like bank accounts with this form, my income was above 125% poverty line.

2) Length of employment is not a big factor, they are looking to see if you will continue to have income after the prospective immigrant enters the USA.

If income exceeds 125% of the poverty line, then don't bother with assets, it only gives the consular officer more questions to ask.

In our case this what the I-134 included.

  • I-134 signed and notarized.
  • Tax transcripts from the IRS for past 3 years, (Redundant for the (1040,W2,1099) but are free from the IRS
  • Photo copy of IRS form 1040, and W2s for past 3 years
  • Letter from my employer stating annual salary, job responsibility, and that is full time, on company letterhead.
  • Photo copies of past 6 months pay stubs up to a few weeks before the interview.
If you list the asset things the consular officer then just has more to ask questions about and you will have to provide more financial evidence. I have bank accounts, 401k and other things but did not list them on the I-134.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Hello - I have some questions that I believe are specific to the I-134 document. In this document, I need to show that I can financially support my future fiance. A few questions about that:

1.) What is a good amount of money to have in savings/checking? What is a safe salary? If your salary/income is sufficient - you do not 'need' savings - for a household of 2 in the Continental US, $17,500 per year is the requirement

2.) Does length of employment for your current job matter? I ask this as I am considering switching companies/jobs just before I might start the K1 process. Length of employment isn't as much a concern as your historical earnings would be - for example they'll look at your most recent Tax return to gleam your 'history'. If submitting a letter from your employer, they'll gleam your current wages/salary.

3.) What should I be concerned about in this particular area?If you're earning over the 125% of Federal Poverty Guidelines now and in the previous year, you should not have to be concerned about too much.

I realize some of my questions are vague, so I will gladly expand on them if necessary.

So let's say I'm WELL above the poverty line with mid-5 digit savings, no dependants and few expenses. If I switch jobs and, say, take 7 weeks unpaid to go to Thailand to visit my potential fiance, this will not hurt the K1 application at all, correct?

Oops. I didn't read one of the replies carefully. Disregard my last statement, here is a revised question:

"If you're earning over the 125% of Federal Poverty Guidelines now and in the previous year, you should not have to be concerned about too much."

This is true for me, and I have savings. Put, If I switch jobs and, say, take 7 weeks unpaid to go to Thailand to visit my potential fiance right before I file for the K1, this will not hurt the K1 application at all, correct?
