We went to both PetSmart and the humane society the other day...Hubby totally fell for a cute border collie mix, but I don't think we could really give a dog like that the kind of attention they would need. He wasn't too happy

Did look at the kitties too - there were a few which he actually liked! We might be back...still can't come to an agreement...

I would say dog just cause I'm a dog lover. But dogs are more work- especially a Lab pup (which I have) he needs 24h surveillance.

Glad you guys did not get a collie. A collie needs room to run and would not do well in an apartment. I hope you find what you are looking for soon.

I am proud to announce that we are now parents of this very sweet kitty:

He was the oldest cat at the shelter (11 years!) But hubby totally fell in love with him, and we were worried that maybe he wouldn't get adopted since everyone wants kittens or younger cats. It's certainly true tho - you don't pick a cat, a cat picks you!!

Now, of course, comes the task of trying to name him...

His shelter name was "Kane," but we both want something different. Here is our list so far:

Rhodesia

Lovecraft (as in H.P.)

Cinder

Horatio (Cane. as in CSI Miami )

Orson (Welles, creator of "Citizen Kane" )

Winston and/or Churchill

Enfield (yes, as in the rifle. This was hubby's idea.)

Chimera

Elysium

D'Elormie (tragic bridegroom from an Edgar Allen Poe poem)

Mephistopheles

It is I, Le Clerc (from 'Allo 'Allo )

Spam (from Monty Python)

Eric the cat (See above)

Holmes

Mycroft

I think choosing the name is harder than choosing the cat...Any suggestions?

Just try a few names on him, see how he reacts to them.

I had a dog that refused to answer to anything but "dog" so that was his name!

He definitely responds to Kane, so I wanted to get a nametag that said "Charles Foster Kane" on it; that way we could call him Kane or Charlie, like they do in the movie

I still like Orson, but he doesn't answer to it at all. Hubby liked Horatio, but he doesn't respond to that. Plus he doesn't have red fur, which I think ought to be a pre-req for any animal named after a David Kelly character

He does respond to Sherlock on occasion, so we've thought about calling him that. My mother-in-law suggested we start calling him "Sherlock Kane," then after he's used to both names, we'd drop the Kane part. Hopefully then he'd respond to Sherlock.

But until then, he's still Kane. I don't know why, but it sounds very weird...
