So, I still can't have a bank account on my married name, because I have a SSN card on my maiden name. Besides, I went to the bank to open a joint account anyway, but the "number" is not yet in the "system' (?)

As I told the other person you can change the name on the SSN record if you can provide proof of the legal name change. You just will not be issued a card in that name until you can provide proof of work authorization. In the meantime SSA can issue you an SSN Verification Printout, which will provide you with some proof of the name on the SSN record until you are eligible to be issue a card in that name.

As far as your number not being in the system, SSA issues a High Group list that shows the highest Group that has been issued within each SSN Area. There were some errors on the August and September lists which have been corrected. A lot a companies use the High Group list to determine if an SSN is valid. This might be why the bank said your SSN was not valid.

RM 00203.510 Alien without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need for an SSN

D. PROCEDURE - SSN CARD REQUEST BY ALIEN NOT AUTHORIZED TO WORK

4. Correcting Numident Data When a Replacement Card Cannot Be Issued

If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid nonwork reason, explain that no replacement card can be issued.

Although a replacement card cannot be issued, the Numident can be corrected if the alien has provided documentation supporting the change (e.g., a name change).

If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the SS-5 to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a card. (suppress issuance of the card).

From the site SSA.gov

Documents for a name change: If you need to change your name on your Social Security card, you must show us a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. Documents Social Security may accept to prove a legal name change include:

Marriage document;

Divorce decree;

Certificate of Naturalization showing a new name; or

Court order for a name change.

I applied for SSN 2 weeks after I arrived here, so I used my maiden name since I was not yet married then. When I got my marriage certificate, I had my name changed on my SSN card. I received the new card a week after.

I read somewhere here that they applied for SSN after they got married and they didn't have any problem with that. If I am not mistaken, her VJ ID is stevent. Look her up.

Hi chris-lei, did you go back to SSA office to have your name changed showing your marriage certificate as proof? Which state are you?

However, the lady said that they will have my single name inputted in my SSN card beause they are basing my immigration status with I-94, and that they need papers from INS to verify my change of status (from single to married)

that's a bunch of #######. Another clueless government employee, our tax dollars at work. My wife got her SS card in her married name. We got married 4 days after she came and went 2 weeks later to get her card. Got it (in married name) without any problems.

Is there a link that I can show to SSA office that marriage license/cert. is enough proof to have my single name changed? I read somewhere here that state laws vary

i don't get it.

Refer the Social Security office personnel to EM-06064, which was issued 10/02/2006 and EM-07045, which was issued 07/03/2007 for the current procedures regarding name changes based on marriage.

Thanks I Quit, you are such a great help not only to me, but to those who are also having the same problem as mine. :)

Hi Fatima, thanks for the compliments!

I'm quite glad you didn't have any problem with filing your SSN with your married name. Anyway, what's important with me is that I have already filed and will have my permanent number, then have it changed with my married name :)

My experience with the SSN was not so good on that. I applied with my maiden name and got the card in the mail. However, when I went back with the Marriage Cert. to change my name in the card, they said that is was not possible because of my status, blah, blah. So, I still can't have a bank account on my married name, because I have a SSN card on my maiden name. Besides, I went to the bank to open a joint account anyway, but the "number" is not yet in the "system' (?)

I just gave up. Now I'm adjusting status and when things come through I'm going to change the name etc.

BTW I'm in Texas.

Oh, we have the same experience. Btw, did you see the link given by I Quit? That can be printed and shown to your local SSA office. With this experience, I think not all employees are aware about it, and unfortunately, both of us were being attended by them.

Good luck on your AOS :)

Hi to all VJ members!!!

I would like to seek advice from you guys

We went to SSoffice and unfortunately they didn't issue me a SSN. I brought with me my marriage contract, birthcertificate and passport with visa with my MAIDEN NAME on it . I'm K3 by the way (but my name on my passport and visa is my MAIDEN NAME) .The lady there told me that I need to wait for my permanent resident visa to be approved with my new name or MARRIED NAME before they can issue me a SSN. Once the permanent resident visa is ok, they can issue SSN with my MARRIED NAME on it.

Also, Do I need an SSN before I can get a driver's license?

Lastly, can I work immediately once I have an EAD?

Advise pls

Thank you very very much.

So you have to wait for your EAD before you can apply for SSN.

Also, Do I need an SSN before I can get a driver's license? Yup, you need SSN or GC.

Lastly, can I work immediately once I have an EAD? Of course you can. :)

Advise pls

Thank you very very much.
