Married name on SSN Card

Hi everyone,

I went to the SSA office yesterday and applied for SSN. I filled up the form with my married name (was married 2+ weeks ago). Took the marriage license for proof. However, the lady said that they will have my single name inputted in my SSN card beause they are basing my immigration status with I-94, and that they need papers from INS to verify my change of status (from single to married) then I can go back to SSA and have my name changed.

Wondering how everyone here got their SSN with their married name on it. Did you wait for your greencard until you have your single name changed to married in your SSN card? How did you go through the process.

Your replies are very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Riza

since you need to updat the SSA of your new immigration status when you get your greencard plus get a new SS card without the "restriction" language on it... we waited until greencard to change the name... saved us a trip

YMMV

that's a bunch of #######. Another clueless government employee, our tax dollars at work. My wife got her SS card in her married name. We got married 4 days after she came and went 2 weeks later to get her card. Got it (in married name) without any problems.

I applied for SSN 2 weeks after I arrived here, so I used my maiden name since I was not yet married then. When I got my marriage certificate, I had my name changed on my SSN card. I received the new card a week after.

I read somewhere here that they applied for SSN after they got married and they didn't have any problem with that. If I am not mistaken, her VJ ID is stevent. Look her up.

Hi chris-lei, did you go back to SSA office to have your name changed showing your marriage certificate as proof? Which state are you?

Is there a link that I can show to SSA office that marriage license/cert. is enough proof to have my single name changed? I read somewhere here that state laws vary

Except that SSA is a Federal agency, so there are no state law differences at issue here.....

I agree  However, I need a proof (valid / official link online) where it says I can have my married name on my SSN card with just the marriage certificate as a proof and not something from INS verifying my married status because others have filed theirs without problems. Does anyone know? Then, I can show it to them :D

Wrong Wrong Wrong. Which bonehead SSA office told you this? SSA doesn't need to verify that you are married with immigration.

If your status has not expired or is within 14 days of expiring and they can verify your K-1 status in your maiden name and you can provide proof of marriage and the I-94 along with your passport, the application can be processed.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name:

When an alien applies for an SSN card, we presume the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change, e.g., marriage, which occurred after the immigration document was issued.

I have applied my SSN with my married name and I dont encounter any problem with that they just check my passport, visa and I-94 but in my application I have my married name and took 2 weeks before I received my card in mail. My SSN has note says authorized to work with DHS docs. heehe

This is what I am looking for. Thank you so much for this link. I presume, the SSA clerk who attended me didn't know this. I wished I had this printed and brought it with me yesterday. I just didn't expect to encounter the problem because almost everyone here had a smooth SSN application with their married name on it with just marriage license/cert. as proof. Thanks again I Quit! You're a big help :)

That's great natfaye. It just means that the person who attended to you knows his work :D

I applied for SSN last week with my married name, showing them only my marriage cert and passport. They didn't even bother to look for my birth certificate, maybe because my husband was in uniform and the social security guard let us jump 70 entries waiting for their turn...my bad...Funny thing tho, when i applied for a driver's permit the lady got confused coz she wondered why would the social security accept my married name when I still have no green card proving I'm married. She didn't even care about my marriage certificate, she even said, married or not, without the green card i would have to use my maiden name still...oh well it's pretty messed up...

And I'm glad I found my true love

Good to hear having your married name on your SSN card :) I hope you were still given driver's permit though even if the lady there didn't honor your marriage certificate.

My experience with the SSN was not so good on that. I applied with my maiden name and got the card in the mail. However, when I went back with the Marriage Cert. to change my name in the card, they said that is was not possible because of my status, blah, blah. So, I still can't have a bank account on my married name, because I have a SSN card on my maiden name. Besides, I went to the bank to open a joint account anyway, but the "number" is not yet in the "system' (?)

I just gave up. Now I'm adjusting status and when things come through I'm going to change the name etc.

BTW I'm in Texas.

Oh, we have the same experience. Btw, did you see the link given by I Quit? That can be printed and shown to your local SSA office. With this experience, I think not all employees are aware about it, and unfortunately, both of us were being attended by them.

Good luck on your AOS :)
