Really, I know very little of political rules and terminology.

I just listen to what people say and observe behaviours.

Hello VJers,

It has been quite confusing for me, a Canadian, as to these terms and flipping them in my mind whilst listening to the news or reading pages and pages of it right here on VJ.

It's like the water is on the wrong side here in Chicago, too, and my internal gyroscope needs to be recalibrated. Oops, I am digressing...

I am curious soul.

In Canada, Liberals are the ones that are pro corporations and capitalism, they cut social spending and kill off community organizations. Booooo!!! Shame!

The Conservatives are the ones that are interested in helping the people, restoring healthcare, keeping our resources nationally owned and not sold off to the highest bidder, etc etc.

That is basically it.

No mention of families of the parties, nor of their religions.

Comments?

Liberal party (center > right wing) in Australia is pro business, conservative, well educated, professionals

Labor party (Center > left) in Australia is pro union, pro welfare, spread the wealth

We also have the Greens which tend to have a lot of the American liberal type of voters..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

As has my family, being immigrants to Canada (from Greece!).

It seems like from times old, immigrants have favoured the NDP.

Yes, it's true that the lines get blurred.

Yup, welcome to reality.

The what's-in-it-for-me mentality.

Sigh...

That must me a Greek / Italian thing because the migrants in AUS also tend to vote for labor (left wing) as well.

I would say 60% of my cousins are Left wing and the other 40% are right wing. And you know Greeks don't discuss or accept opposing politics very well.

Haha...true!

I was in Greece only once, as an adult, during an election there.

(I'm born in Cannuckleland.)

Pandemonium.

I couldn't believe there was a structure left that didnn't have spray painting on it, and that that no one killed each other.

Talk about PASSION!!

Then again they are that way about soccer (football to Europeans) too.

Hee, hee!

Imagine how I feel. Our Packet 3 is delayed because the ###### mail system is striking.

Late last year there were strikes in every single government service, including garbage. Now THAT was chaos.

While we're going to have a house in Greece to visit at any time, I'm looking forward to not living there. Sometimes, it amazes both of us Greece ever made it into the EU.

It has plenty of good people, but for someone who is used to things working timely and efficiently, this is not the place to live.

Unionists, Democratic Unionist Party, Sinn Fein, Social Democratic and Labor Party..............

Chaos.

Hamos in Greek.

They invented it!

Hahaha!

Sad to hear of the strike and how that is affecting you.

How horrible!!!

And you need not tell me about their anarchistic ways.

They are allergic to systems.

Whilst visiting there a few times it drove me crazy when I needed to get something done.

From afar, I admire it.

Maybe one day I/we will live there.

Perhaps for a year or 3.

On an island away from anything resembling Athens.

Mmmmm, quiet....until the tourists come from all over for the Summer.

Hahaha!

One important thing to remember is that the terms "conservative" or "liberal" really don't mean a whole lot in the United States. Sure, people refer to different politicians as such or call each other something similar, but there are no official parties called the conservative or liberal anything. The only two parties that have any sway in the U.S. are the Republicans and the Democrats.

While most people associate liberalism (the U.S. form of it) with Democrats and conservatism (once again, the U.S. form) with Republicans, this isn't strictly true. Just as each person looks at every issue differently, so do politicians. In other words, on some issues a particular politician may be "conservative" and on others, he might be "liberal."

In the U.S., the party itself is far less important to voters than the candidate. People vote for the individual, sometimes forgetting that when someone gets elected, their party and ideals usually follow. Look at the different politicians running for president (or at least, many who were at one point). I've known plenty of Democrats who've despised Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama and Republicans who couldn't stand John McCain.

Another important aspect of the "conservative" and "liberal" labels is that it's easier for people (i.e. voters) to peg the candidates. Knowing the facts about each candidate is often too much work for many people, so they'll think, "So-and-so is a Democrat, therefore he must be a liberal. I consider myself a liberal, so I'll vote for him." It's a moronic way to cast your vote, but that's what happens.
