ALBUQUERQUE The chairwoman of an Otero County Republican women's group on Tuesday defended a letter to the editor in which she wrote, ''I believe Muslims are our enemies.''

Marcia Stirman, a 56-year-old interior decorator, also called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama ''a Muslim socialist.''

...

The letter ran Tuesday in the Alamogordo Daily News. It was titled ''Why I'm a Republican'' and listed 16 reasons for her party affiliation.

...

Stirman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that she was surprised by reaction to her letter.

...

She said of Muslims: ''I don't trust them at all. They've sworn across the world that they are our enemies. Why we're trying to elect one is beside me.''

...

''I still have freedom of speech and an opinion. If the Islamic group doesn't like it, well, I don't like what's going on in their camp, either,'' Stirman said.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

This is yet another reason why interest groups should be ignored and all political funding besides public wiped out.

i think any political funding should be capped so whoever wins isn't whoever spends the most.

You're only saying that because Democrats raise more, which is why McCain played the game he did.

Given politicians clear history and record of favoring those private interests in a #######-for-tat measure, and this having more clout than the people who VOTE them in, there's no sense anymore in having anything other than public funding. And we should seriously think about giving funding to any political party that can gather more than a million signatures to be placed on the ballot. The less corporate and private financing of elections, the more third party votes there will be. Also, the less sh!t we'll see about AT&T financing the DNC (as a return gift for their immunity), which was a huge joke.

I might be supportive of a lower cap on individual contributions, but I would not support a cap on the number of individual contributions. Any legal contributor who wishes to contribute should be able to do so.

Which is why we're in the trouble we're in.

Both parties cater extensively, near-exclusively, to big money. It should not be money that decides elections.

If people want to contribute individually, give your vote. Or put up a sign.
