Flying through the ATL

Has anybody flown through ATL? My wife has a two hour layover in the ATL, I know we have prayed about it, but besides reading the POE entries, can anybody give me some advice about it. I have spoken to an staff member of ATL international, she told me that immigration and customs could take up to an hour and a half. Giving her 30 minutes to find her way to which concourse and the gate number.

It has me a little frazzled!

Any advice is good advice. Thanks!

I frequently fly in and out of the ATL airport on business. It is indeed a large airport, and would highly suggest that your wife has approximately 30 minutes + in order to get from one Concourse to another. Be sure that she understands to take the train to her new Concourse instead of walking.

As for the POE ~ Atlanta was my husband's POE and I took a flight to meet him there. It did take approximately one hour for him to get through Immigration. With a two hour lay over, I can't honestly say that you should/should not be concerned. Nevertheless, the most effective thing to do is to simply pray, and turn it over to God.

I used to live in Atlanta and have flown in and out of there quite a bit. As Boaz said, it's a very large airport and she needs to take the train if she needs to depart from a different concourse. If at all possible find out what concourse she will be arriving and departing from. Running in that airport is not uncommon! Good luck.

I was reading the Delta international carriage agreement and it says that they don't allow ANY extra baggage to LOS. Does anyone know if this is true ? Typical of going to Nigeria people think you look like a two legged pack mule.

When I was going to Ghana on Delta in July they were having people repack their bags/take out stuff if they were over the weight limit. I had 2 bags, one 54lbs, the other 52lbs and they made me repack my stuff until they were both 50lbs. I had to stick some stuff in my carry on (which was already heavy).

I remember one guy had 3 bags to check in and he was told no. He offered to pay and everything and they said no. Luckily he was there with some others and they took his extra bag home.

My hubby came thru there in April. He had a horrible experience! The flight was late getting into ATL..(about 20minutes) it only took about 30 minutes at immigration....but he was at the end of the line (cuz he was one of the last off the plane) Then he had to go get his baggage which was very far from where he was. (We thought they transferred the baggage from plane to plane!) So u might want to call the airline to check cuz this will take up alot of time. After he collected his bags he had to go thru another customs area where some people had to open their bags and be searched. Then after that he had to find where his connecting flight was, which is very confusing and not clearly marked (at least not for someone who has never been to an american airport before!...lol) Several other Nigerians were lost as well, and my hubby ended up leading everyone after he asked several times for direction. (luckily he was not too overwhelmed or shy to ask someone for help!) When he finally made it to the right place...he missed the flight!!!!!!! He had a 2 hour layover, but because of all the running around he missed it. They did book him onto the next flight, but it was 8 hrs later, and he had to sleep in the airport and he froze his poor little butt off! And he had no way to call me, cuz he didnt kno how to use the pay phone, nor did he have money for it! I ended up having an airport policeman call ATL and found out he had missed the flight. It was a total nightmare cuz i had gotton a hotel room since we live over 3 hours from the airport he was flying into...and i had to stay another night!!! Which cut our mini honeymoon short! But thank God he made it safe and sound!

Hope I didnt scare you...I'm sure there are others who had better experiences....but ours was not fun at all!

Good luck.

God Bless (L)

Man! What an experience! :o For my husband ATL was his POE, and final destination. I can only imagine if he had an experience similiar to yours. All in all, I'm glad he arrived safely.

Thank you all very much for all the input! We have told her to ask, ask, ask. We even got a toll free number through vonage, which we will have for the month so she can call us at the airport to indicate she is going to get on the plane.

I haven't slept well in a week. She missed her flight to Ontario, CA. Fortunately, there was a Yoruba woman at the ticket counter, who assisted my in getting a room and a food voucher for the night. I have to laugh though. She had sweet and sour chicken and rice. She said the chicken was sweet, with orange sauce, and the rice was tasteless. I had to tell her that she will have to get used to different types of food.

I guess getting her hooked on to Burritos is going to be a work in progress.

Anyhow, I have to wait another 6 1/2 hours now. @sigh@

I was so disappointed, I felt kinda crushed she didn't get here yesterday.

She'll be here this morning though, so I guess the consolation prize isn't that bad.
