Hi guys! My husband wants to adopt my son, who is 13 yrs old. What are the steps? We already have conditional greencard. Thanks a lot.

adoption is covered by family law... family law is state specific... You need to try google for these laws for your state as a starter

YMMV

I would start with a consult with a lawyer.

I know a member on another board who did just that, the adopted child then got US citizenship automatically, just needed to file a N-600 after the adoption.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Hmm, let's see if I can remember, this was for Illinois, if a biological father exits, have to get his permission first, if here, had to appear before a judge and give his permission under oath, then we appeared in court for the official adoption, my adopted son was 3 years old and was issued a new birth certificate with me as the father. Believe, but don't know, that should cover any immigration issues.

Best thing to do is to find an attorney that specializes in adoption, and I also learned living in a small hick town, much better to hire an attorney from a large city, these little hick attorneys can rob you, you really have to know you are hiring a good honest attorney from a reputable law firm.

The other thing I remember, the court experience was very enjoyable, the judge came down from his bench and shook our hands and wished us a very happy family life. If there is a biological father around, good way for him to get out of child support payments, relinquish all visiting rights so can you live a peaceful life.
