Okay, i just want to ask if someone ever encounter such thing.

my concern regarding the SSN is about the name. i got my ssn under my single name and did tried to replaced it for my new married name. unfortunately, they never asked me first what to put instead they do it in their own way. what i mean is this:

SINGLE NAME: NOVA ALBAO SALAS

MARRIED NAME should be and wants to appear in the SSN card is:

NOVA SALAS BROWN

unfortunately like i said, i want to used the NOVA SALAS BROWN and not the one the SSA gave me which is NOVA ALBAO BROWN.

i know i am not making sense but i just want to bring my single lastname into my middle name now that i'm married.

btw, the SSA didn't issued me the new card since my I-94 is already expired yet, to the receipt they give me they address it as: NOVA ALBAO BROWN.

my question is:

1) is there a possible way for me to choose the desire name that i want to brings? or not?

2) will it matter in the marriage certificate? because so far they asked me to write my full single name and ask only if what will be the lastname [new surname] that i'll be brining.

3) i do hope that there is some positive response because i'm desperate to use SALAS instead of ALBAO. though its not that i dont like my moms maiden name but i just want it to be that way.

If your I-94 was expired are you sure they did the name correction on your SN record, since you can't be issued a card until you have proof of work authorization.

If the name on your SSN record has been changed to NOVA ALBAO BROWN, it shouldn't be a problem to change it to NOVA SALAS BROWN.

I would find out first if the name on the SSN record was changed. You should be able to find that out by call the SSA 800# 1-800-772-1213. Just tell them you applied for a name change and want to know it has been done.

You have a couple option on changing it to the name you want, you can do it now, but will not be issued a card or wait until you have proof of work authorization. I assume you filled or will file you AOS and EAD applications in the name you want on the SSN record.

Option 1 No Card Issued

RM 00203.510 Alien without Work Authorization - Nonwork Need for an SSN

D. PROCEDURE - SSN CARD REQUEST BY ALIEN NOT AUTHORIZED TO WORK

4. Correcting Numident Data When a Replacement Card Cannot Be Issued

If the alien does not provide evidence of work authorization or a valid nonwork reason, explain that no replacement card can be issued.

Although a replacement card cannot be issued, the Numident can be corrected if the alien has provided documentation supporting the change (e.g., a name change).

If the alien provides documentation supporting the change, process the SS-5 to update the Numident information but suppress the issuance of a card. (suppress issuance of the card).

Option 2 Card Issued

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name

In cases where an alien applies for a replacement SSN card and submits an immigration document showing a name that is different from the name on the prior Numident record, accept the immigration document as evidence of the legal name. In these cases, the prior SSN card may have been issued in a name that was not the NH’s legal name.

D 6. Change of Middle Name to Maiden Name on SSN Card

Lisa Smith Jones applies for a replacement SSN card in that name because she lost her SSN card. The prior Numident records show the names Lisa Marie Smith and Lisa Jones. She submits a driver’s license showing her name as Lisa S. Jones.

It is a common occurrence in the U.S. for a woman to take her maiden name as the middle name after marriage. Because a legal name generally consists of a first or given name and a surname or family name, whether the identity document submitted shows the middle name is included, omitted or incorrect does not matter.

SSA can process the change of Lisa’s middle name. This is not a legal name change because the first and last names have not changed.

NOTE: In cases where there are questions about whether the applicant is the number holder, it may be necessary to request additional evidence of identity and the have the applicant explain middle name changes.

EM-06064 Enumeration: Change in Policy Regarding Acceptable Name Change Documents for a Replacement SSN Card for a Name Change

2. Evidence of New Name

Accept a document listed in A.1. as evidence of the new name if the new name can be derived from the document. RM 00203.210B.1 shows examples of how to derive a new name from the marriage document. This EM makes the existing ”Interim Guidance” in RM 0203.210B.1.a. to RM 0203.210B.1.c. permanent and is applicable to these name change requests:

-- bride takes the groom’s last name;

-- groom takes bride’s last name;

-- spouse takes the other spouse’s last name (e.g., same-sex couples); or

-- compound name (with or without hyphen) of each spouse’s original name for either or both parties.

4. Subsequent Name Changes - Based on the Same Event

Subsequent name changes based on a previously submitted marriage document are permitted as long as the new surname can be derived from the marriage document. For example, if Laura Michaels changed her surname on her SSN card to her husband’s surname (Williams) and later decides to change her surname to a compound name (Michaels-Williams) which is a combination of her original surname and her husband’s surname, you may change her surname to Michaels-Williams as long as you can derive Michaels-Williams from the marriage document. Since the marriage document states Laura Michaels married Henry Williams, you can derive her new surname, Michaels-Williams, from the marriage document.

wow, thank you so much for the quick response and other information that i may be able to read and get ideas with.

as for your question, i got my SS card on my single name that means i had a name on it which is NOVA ALBAO SALAS during that time my I-94 was not expired that way they still gave me the SS number.

then after we got married which is my I-94 was already been expired for 2 weeks, i went to SSA [with a big mistake] and asked for the change or correction of my single name SALAS into my married name BROWN. showing all my requirements, the girl might be new that's why she didn't informed me about my I-94 expired already.

The reason that i am struggling with this issue was when i look at the receipt they have given me. they assumed and put my name on it which is NOVA ALBAO BROWN. and i just noticed it when i arrived home. another mistake is that, when we were asked to go back to the office as they requested to see the documents we have, i never asked the lady who is incharge during that day regarding my NAME.

And the lady in SSA told me that they can't give me a new SS card because my I-94 is expired and they want to verify at DHS of my name. then, if they can't verify it she told me to wait for a letter in mail whether if i will be issued a card or not. if not that means my name was not been verified in DHS. obviously because i haven't filed for my AOS, EAD and Advance Parole applications.

once again, i assume the name that was given to me because of the reciept the lady from SSA had given to me.
