Hello Kanna04,

You do need original documents to send to NVC. NVC will not schedule the interview data until they receive the original document and your wife can take copies of the documents during the interview.

Whoever will be the agent (often the petitioner) should retain original copies of documents for eventually sending to NVC when requested. Make sure the documents (e.g. police clearances) don't expire.

Hello,

It depends on what visa you are going for. If you are doing straight CR1/IR1 visa, the NVC will ask you for the orginal documents before they send it to the embassey. If you are going for the K3 it really depends when the CR1/IR1 is approved by the USCIS. If the K3 visa is approved before the CR1/IR1 (I-130) then I would make sure the documents are in India. If they get approved together, then you might be better off keeping them yourself to send to the NVC.

My lawyer told me that with the DS 230 the NVC also wants orginal and one copy of each Marriage Cert, Spouse Birth, police report(s) etc. I would get the DS 230 filled out, (Completely) (don't leave anything blank - use none, never or N/A if no information applys) make a couple copies before signing them. She will have to sign the 2nd page Part I and depending on the visa, send it to the consulate (K3) or back to you CR1/IR1 to forward to NVC. The signature date has to be after the request.

To be on the safe side, see if you can get duplicate certified orginals. It is easy for the Marriage and Birth Cert. A little tricky for the police reports. Don't forget there is two. One from the local police and one from the Pass Port Office.

Use FED EX to transfer documents. It is money worth spending. (3-4 days delivery) Postal Service sucks in India. They lose things.

I am just learning this myself. My husband had all the orginals in India and just sent them FED EX to our lawyer. But at least we had everything done and together.

Best Wishes
