The son of one of my best friends has been offered a job teaching English in Surgut, Russia. He currently is working in Alaska and was interviewed for the job. Apparently it pays $1,000 a month plus room. I'm trying to get specifics about life in this remote city in Siberia, so that he can make an informed decision.

If you have specific knowledge about life there, please respond.

I have specific information..... about Asia!

Asia's going rate is $2000-$2500/month with housing and return tickets, etc.

He will have the chance to freelance on the side, whether that be typing subtitles for TV shows, providing extra help for kids/adults, translating texts for newspapers, working at the hospital, etc. in either place but at least in Asia he'll be warm while he's doing it!

Tell your friend to look it up on the internet. If he likes arctic winters (7 months a year!), air and water pollution (Surgut is a gas and oil production center), and can fit lots of books and games in his suitcase (it's a VERY small city) then he'll love it!

Of course he could work in Moscow teaching in private kindergartens for a few hours a week and pick up private students (at $100/hr) earning $3-4000 a month, but there's no comparison to the true Russian experience that Surgut offers..... :jest: :
