Conservative Houston Chronicle endorses Obama

Obama ... [is] thoughtful and analytical. He has met his opponents' attacks with calm and reasoned responses. ... While Arizona Sen. John McCain and his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have struck an increasingly personal and negative tone in their speeches, Obama has continued to talk about issues of substance....

That's really the big difference between their campaigns.

If I were voting for McCain I'd have ditched his ### quickly with the fact that his only attacks on Obama for relevant issues include repeating the same garbled aphorisms like "spread the wealth around", and obsessing over Joe the Plumber. It's very hard to defend stupidity like that, which is why hardcore Republicans, in response, don't even try -- they just attack Obama instead.

The Houston Comical...conservative? Ha! What a joke. They are the biggest illegal alien cheerleader ragsheet in the USA. No wonder they love Obama. No surprises there. I don't hardly find the Comical's endorsement anything to crow about. I look at it more as..."it figures".

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

 Eh, "The Globe And Mail" (considered by many Canucks as almost an NDP--"Liberal-in-hurry"--propaganda sheet) is conservative compared to the Comical!

A paper that hasn't endorsed a democrat for President in 44 years probably isn't the most liberal rag on the planet. Let's consider who the Chronicle endorsed -- Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Dole, Bush, Obama.

Not all of these folks fit my understanding of a conservative (after all, before Bush II, Reagan and Bush I were presidents who had the biggest budget deficits in history) but this is not a record of endorsing liberals.

a CINO (conservative, name-only) such as Dole, or one of the Jorge Bushes is still a groat (liberal--developped from the Canuck nickname "Grit" as reference to Liberal party).

Or another way--"Liberal, Tory, both only useful for suppository".

If so, why have they not endorsed a "liberal" since Lyndon Johnson?

Shhh: "Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Dole, Bush, Obama" (too much of a broken pattern there).

Let's see:
  • Two pretend-Texans (Bushes, born in New England--though if I look at it another way, their claim to being Texan is as valid as mine of being a Calgarian)
  • Two unquestionable midwesterners, Dole and (TX has ties with that region, being separated from it by ONE intervening state), and one out-transplanted one (Reagan, born in IL) and one in-transplanted (bh0)
  • only break in pattern is the unquestionably Californican Tricky-D!3k Nixon

Here is some more confusion ... Ford was never elected vp or pres ... :P

Here is some more confusion ... Ford was never elected pres ... :P
Seems though more like a pattern of backing losers (at least once):
  • Nixon (conceded to JFK in 1960)
  • Ford (narrowly lost to Carter--and this was with relatively-fresh memory of Watergate)
  • Bush Sr (1992, lost to Bubba)
  • Pineapple (1996, lost to Bubba)
  • in which case Jorge Jr is the only break

So (for peejay), it looks more like the Comical's endorsement is like a kiss from a consumptive.

Yeah... US geography influencing a newspaper's political endorsement. I would go for that if the candidate was literally a hometown fav, but admit it... its all about their interpretation of the issues they feel are important to voters. Hence, its a party issue.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Clarification on my 10:17 post: Reagan ran in 1976 (on GOP ticket) and received one electoral vote (in WA, from a 'faithless elector'), so also fits the pattern of losing at least once.
