I can't blame OPEC as much as our own EPA and congress for our current situation, any attempts for alternate energy sources in the 70's were killed by congress and the newly formed EPA besides emissions, limited drilling in this country.

First we had the interstate system allowing GM and Exxon to buy up interurban railroads and instantly tearing them down, but hey they were severely punished by this with $5,000.00 anti-trust fines for each railroad. This forced commuters to buy cars and gas that led to the energy crisis in the early 70's. Furthermore, the EPA was not the least concerned about fuel economy, only emissions, questionable as to who is responsible for these low fuel economy passenger trucks and SUV's that were outselling more economical means of transportation.

Next is the failure of government to provide the infrastructure to the many automobiles added to the highways. In cities like Chicago, could hit downtown in about ten minutes back then, today, can take over four hours and the same is true for every US city. Hybrids are useless when creeping along at 2-3 mph, and fuel economy is positively terrible in less than the 5 mpg range for many vehicles.

We have a known 4,000 year of natural gas, another 3,000 years of methane, and another couple thousand years of shell methane we can use right now to power our vehicles, even have the technology to do it, so why are we screwing around with OPEC. Our money to Venezuela is making matters much worse for us with that self proclaimed dictator, yeah he is giving free beer to the poor, was there, saw that. And pouring cash into the middle east, well, don't have to talk about the effects of that.

We were able to crack on only the theory, but in practice the energy of nuclear fission in less than three years for a war, but yet over 50 years has gone by with very little research done with nuclear fusion, instead playing games with wind power, solar cells, and fuel cells. Wind power is becoming competitive, but takes more energy to manufacture solar and fuel cells than what they are capable of producing over their lives. Ethanol is totally ridiculous, they didn't plan that a bushel of corn would raise from a buck and a half to over 8 bucks and still rising a bushel. Have you checked your meat and diary products prices recently?

While Alaska has huge reserves, most of this oil is going to the highest bidder, Japan, and the profits are not going into our IRS, but in Exxon's pockets. While both Ford and GM are producing vehicles in Europe that can easily get over 55 mpg, not allowed to be sold here due to emission requirements even though European requirements are stricter than ours, plus we have to pay a stiff tariff.

Want to really know who are enemies are? Look no further than Washington D.C. Carter did pass a law that our own electrical energy production has to be done with 99% domestic energy and still holds true, so explain why our electrical rates are keeping up with OPEC oil prices based on BTU equivalents. Somebody is making a couple of bucks off of us, and in this case, it ain't OPEC.
