I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind, something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory. I had discovered that it didn't make any difference whether you smoked reefer in the white classmate's sparkling new van, or in the dorm room of some brother you'd met down at the gym, or on the beach with a couple of Hawaiian kids who had dropped out of school and now spent most of their time looking for an excuse to brawl. There's no hypocrisy here. I am not the one calling for the punishment of drug addicts. Rush Limbaugh was. And Jeb Bush, and John McCain. And yet, when it was them or their family, then the tune changed for the treatment their own. That's what hypocrisy is.

Me? I think drugs should be legalized. The war on drugs is as much - if not more - of a farce as the war on terrorism.

I really do hope these labels get skewed a lot more. People need to start defining themselves individually. I know how much people want to be in a group and all, but this is one of those things where no one else should have a say in who you vote for.
