My fiance just interviewed at the us embassy in moscow, and her K1 visa got approved! I have been looking up flights for her to fly into JFK. A round trip would be about 700 dollars, while a one way would cost about 1500 dollars. I would love to purchase the round trip tickets, but since she would not be using the second flight, would this be considered fraudulous??

Also, when she is departing Moscow, are the people working at the airport going to regulate what kind of flight she can fly in? Will they know that she has a K1 visa, and is likely not returning, and therefore wont be needing a roundtrip flight??

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

just cancel your retuen flight once your fiance gets there, the return flight is good for 1 year after it has been cancelled with most airlines, they usually charge a small fee to rebook the flight.

Congratulations

When I make my final flight to the US I'm getting the single fare. I looked up on US Airways site because I REALLY don't wanna pay double for half the flights! It said that purchasing the roundtrip and cancelling the return flight is considered fraudulous. Personally, I don't want my first action on coming to the US to be committing fraud! If you're not sure, check with your airline.

Just my two cents... but yeah, I'm feeling you on the hiked up costs. It really sucks. The advantage with single fares is that it's equally extortionate all year round. There's no 'peak' season (from what I've seen).

There is no advantage of buying a single fare, it costs more to buy a single flight for a start off.

All you have to do is cancel the flight or book the return flight for months later. You may use that return flight and it is not going to hurt anyone to have it, like i said earlier you can use the return part up to 12 months after you cancel the flight, i know cos i have cancelled several flights and rebooked at a later date.

I agree with Donna. That should be the case. It is the airline protecting their business so they say it is fraudulent. But heckl, so what? You are the customer. Go for the round trip. and reschedule your flight back - or cancel it. or better yet, go for the no show - even better!

Just to clarify - thousands of fiancé's and spouses and their children (K1,K2,K3,CR-1 etc) fly in to the US every year on round trip tickets and it is not fraud.

When booking international flights into the US you are asked a series of questions - one of which has to do with your Visa (which is verified in person prior to departure). Have the right visa - you have no problems - likewise, have the right visa, you're able to purchase a one-way ticket (whereas tourists are not even allowed to do so). Everyone (including the airlines) knows almost always it's cheaper to book round-trip versus one-way.

As far as canceling or getting credit for an unused portion of a 'trip' that will depend on the airline.

i have cancelled and rebooked with USairways, Continental airlines and United, my experience is that they will not give a refund but will allow you to rebook the same flight, no name changes no new destinations just the same flight. Some have charged a booking fee but not others, a round trip u may or may not use is not what i would call fraud, after all you have relatives friends and life that changes and you may want or need to visit back home. even though u would still need new flights to return to USA 2 new return flights are still going to be cheaper than 3 single trips

I've worked for Pan Am & Delta and gotten in trouble for suggesting that in the past -

However there is nothing they can do if you "change your mind" and decide not to go back.

Usually the lower RT fare is non refundable and you've paid the international departure

taxes to go back on the ticket, but heck, it's a lot cheaper - Go for it !

Just call and cancel the return so they have the opportunity to sell that seat.

Yes, they'll just sell it again. The airlines don't care as they will be making more money out of selling the seat twice.

So don't cancel the return flight, just don't use it. You paid for it, they can't prosecute you for not using it.

That is not fraudulent. People do it all the time.

Do whatever is cheaper for you, as it doesn't matter at all.

Good luck.

I worked at travel agencies for many years. it is absolutely not fraudulous to buy a round trip ticket and not use the return portion. In fact, that is what I did when I flew here. Airlines don't like it when people buy single tickets so that's why they charge these ridiculous fares for them. Airlines also don't like travel agencies telling the customer that they can buy the cheaper round trip ticket and not use the return portion, but it is being done everywhere. It is up to you whether or not you cancel the return flight. It really makes no difference. If you do, technically, you can apply for a refund of the unused portion. But in reality, most airlines only refund a small portion of the airport taxes (so not the ticket fee itself) and usually the administration fee is higher than the amount to be refunded so this is generally not done. Whether or not you can rebook to a different date, depends on the ticket conditions that specifically apply to the ticket you bought. You need to check that with your travel agency or the airline. There is nothing wrong with not canceling the return portion of the ticket. The airline can sell the seat again on the day of the departure if you don't check in for the flight. Just thought I'd clarify this a bit ;)

Hello,

Not sure why you are seeing the round trip cheaper than one way? My fiance is coming over from India on 11/6 on a one way ticket that is costing him $702. I checked a round trip, same flight, leaving on Bombay on 11/6 and returning 12/4 that would cost $1266. It's with Continental online.

Maybe check continental??
