Christopher Buckley endorses Obama

Christopher Buckley, a political satirist, magazine editor and journalist, is best known as the author of comic novels about Washington's power elite, especially his farcical take on the tobacco lobby, "Thank You for Smoking" (1994), which was adapted into a 2005 film.

The son of the late William F. Buckley Jr., Mr. Buckley was a speechwriter for George H. W. Bush. He is a libertarian-leaning conservative, but his personal politics have never stopped him from lampooning Republicans as viciously as Democrats in his novels and opinion columns.

In October 2008, Mr. Buckley set off a controversy in the conservative press by endorsing Senator Barack Obama's candidacy for president in a column for the Internet magazine The Daily Beast headlined, "Sorry, Dad, I'm Voting for Obama."

National Review, the conservative publication founded by his father -- where he was a columnist -- accepted his subsequent offer of resignation. He explained his decision in a column in The Daily Beast.

The Obama endorsement followed a favorable op-ed column Mr. Buckley wrote about Senator John McCain in The Times in February 2008.

In The Daily Beast column endorsing Senator Obama, Mr. Buckley wrote: "This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' " —Blake Wilson, Oct. 16, 2008

I don't give a flying frog whom he endorses.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Wow, VW. Just because I don't agree with these guys doesn't mean I haven't been reading father, and then son, for nearly forty years ...

I find Buckley Jr's defection ... interesting and amusing.

I actually posted Chris' endorsement here last week. I have not read anything prior Chris has read or said, but I did watch a lot Firing Line and got to know William F. Buckley through that. Even his publication, National Review, has drifted away from much of what Buckley had espoused. The neo-con hawks have dominated right thinking politics for the last decade or so and it looks like their shelf life has expired.

My bad, Jabberwocky, that I didn't notice your post: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...&hl=Buckley

why?

For the past thirty years, conservative intellectuals have driven GOP political ascendency and dominated public policy formulation and implementation under Republican and, in important ways, even under Clinton's, administration.

To see them bailing on the GOP now, as Buckley does in this endorsement and as others (David Brooks' characterization of Palin as a "cancer on the Republican party" and a person who is unquestionably not qualified to be President come to mind, although there are other examples) reveals a rudderless, intellectually vacuous conservative movement. We will see soon just how deep is this crisis in American conservatism.

As AJ keeps reminding us, though, it isn't over until the voting is done -- and it might not be over even then, given threats of voting fraud (look what is happening with voting machines in West Virginia) and voter suppression that the Republicans are trying to bring to bear on this election.
